landlords should not exist. the position of a landlord is an unnecessary middle-man whose only function is to funnel wealth and resources away from people and functions that would otherwise use them.

When I was searching for a house, it wasn't uncommon to see good places going up for sale, being bought up, and listed again as rentals at absurd price hikes very shortly thereafter.

My problem with landlords is the literal abundance of them. Established folks with money snapping up potential investments and turning them into perpetual-cash-drains for people not lucky enough to already have their fortune. Its led to cost of living skyrocketing literally everywhere you look. Its creating a bubble, one I cant wait to see burst

They are well within their right, I acknowledge. On a personal level, fuck them.

Utah was proactive about this. Put all their empty homes to use, housing homeless people.

I hate exploitive landlords. My landlord is good. Hasnt raised rent on me in over 2 years, let me call a plumber to fix sink and dishwasher issues and let me take it out of rent. Never drops by.

This isnt only about the pandemic. There would be less anti-landlord rhetoric if they hadnt spent the past decade increasing rent prices on an astronomical level. People were struggling to pay unfair rent costs before this happened and they simply dont have the money to pay two months of back rent, which would be like $3000. The government only gave us $1200 which usually isnt enough for one month.

Actually yes. Typically, expenses on a large apartment complex (greater than 20 units) run about 50-52% of rental income. Keep in mind this is only the operating margin, so it doesn't include property taxes, mortgage, capital, or income taxes. After all is said and done a typical apartment complex will have a net profit of around 5-12% depending upon class of tenants. I know this because I've worked in real estate for 5+ years, but you can easily go to google and verify this by looking at actual P&L statements for apartment buildings for sale.

Everybody needs a place to live, but many cannot afford to buy their own house. Landlords recognize this, and many use this to take advantage of their tenants.

Kind of? We should invest more into public transportation; many people can't afford cars and that essentially cuts them off from any upward mobility in society.

I agree with investing in programs that help those less fortunate. I was moreso asking my question under the presumption that some people may eventually expect to be able to walk into a grocery store or car dealership and say "give me, it's my human right".

To me that sounds just as entitled as telling your landlord that you don't have to pay him for living in what he owns since housing is your human right.

I don't see how we are expecting to get all these free things without it bankrupting the taxpayer.

first of all, it's dishonest to frame it as though this is hatred. we simply acknowledge that the position of a landlord is an inherently exploitative one. please use accurate terminology if you want to have a serious discussion.

second, the comparison to "cooks" and "grocery stores" is inaccurate. the apt comparison here would be to the owner of the restaurant, or to the owner of the grocery store. all of whom receive similar criticism -- they make money by owning a building/business rather than by doing anything (there are definitely restaurant owners who do work in addition to owning the business, but it still is not inherent to the position)

Idk, tenents can always find someplace else to live. But the months of unpaid rent, eviction/court cost, maintenance fees and losing your investment property or being forced to sell it at a loss sucks alot more in my opinion.

Also it's not, and never was their home to lose....

If a landlord loses money and is struggling, then clearly they made bad choices in life. They should get no sympathy or handouts.

Not my last landlord lol. I think youre mistaking landlords with property managers, and we didnt have the latter either. Thankfully our downstairs neighbor did the lawn so we just did the shoveling/salting.

Either way it doesn't change what I was referring to. There seems to be a recent trend of kids coming up who expect many things to just be free such as healthcare, housing, schooling etc. I have seen first hand what entitlement looks like since I work construction and many fuckers refuse to put in half the effort I do yet expect to get paid my wage, and they do.

There absolutely needs to be services out there for individuals truly struggling but for your typical bratty American to just want everything (hyperbole) for free I say "fuck you, work for it".
