I've read some argue that landlords shouldn't make any profit and should rent out at the cost of the mortgage. But when you rent, you have no responsibility to the property. If something breaks, landlord takes care of it. In addition, you have the freedom to move out whenever you want vs having to sell the property. So shouldn't you be expected to pay more for this?

I don't think it's a right under any government... Or are you saying it should be a right? And if so, what if you don't want the basic house but want a nicer house?

My apartment complex is 1400 a month, times that by 200 residents that's almost $280000 a month in revenue.

I do not feel bad if a pandemic happens and people cannot pay rent.

The rent in my area rose 33% over 5 years. There wasn't any real reason for it: no new taxes, no big development, no major influx of new residents - but the company in charge of the property wanted to bleed out as much money as they could. Most people are lucky to get a 3% raise a year to keep up with inflation, that would still only cover HALF the increase in rent, proportionally.

And, no, you shouldn't be expected to pay a premium for land that you don't even own.

During the pandemic, the general argument is who has more to lose. A landlord, at worse, may lose an investment property to a bank. A tenant loses their home. In a pandemic situation like this, people will probably side with the tenant since they have more to lose.

And I say this as a landlord myself.

What other people said. A lot of landlords get really greedy. They raise the rent but dont provide anything more for that if they did anything to begin with.

You're basically paying someone for a service but for some reason they have all the advantages and don't actually do anything. Also if you can't afford the service you're basically out in the wilderness, but unlike the actual wilderness, you can't go anywhere or do anything without civilization's permission, even if the point of civilization is to not be in the wilderness.

Siding with the tenant makes no sense either, because tenants will lose a place to live either way. The banks sure as hell aren't going to let people live rent free in their newly acquired property.

Idk, tenents can always find someplace else to live. But the months of unpaid rent, eviction/court cost, maintenance fees and losing your investment property or being forced to sell it at a loss sucks alot more in my opinion.

Also it's not, and never was their home to lose....

Why the fuck would anyone complain about having to pay for being allowed to live in a structure that was built and is maintained for them and has enough amenities in it to make their lives relatively comfortable. Talk about leeches.

Kind of? We should invest more into public transportation; many people can't afford cars and that essentially cuts them off from any upward mobility in society.

I can certainly see some of the hate for landlords pushing for evictions during this pandemic. I'm sure there are some tenants taking advantage, but there's kind of a pandemic going on. Nobody, including the landlords, should have to worry about losing their homes right now

I had a landlord who used to come over and crash on the couch in the middle of the night, yap at us about his family problems, leave me threatening messages about throwing out my property if i didn't adjust my payment plan, and sarcastically laugh and make dirty faces at us.

that's why

My landlord raised rent to pay for heating used on the radiators.

A year later they turned the heating off and gave us electric heaters, and strangely the rent didn't go back down! Funny that.

Cause people expect landlords to magically fix all their problems in the house instantly. Which is pretty stupid. Though there are also a ton of shitty landlords too. Also evicting people during a pandemic is pretty shitty.

It costs much more than you seem to believe to stay at a homeless shelter. I paid far more dearly in my time there than when I stayed at my sisters ritzy condo.
