lol just looking at social media of people who list hiking as a hobby, it seems like the whole hiking thing is just a euphemism for not having non-media consuming hobbies. And its pretty much always confirmed if you know the person IRL where they are usually binge tv series watchers. For some reason they feel a need to list a hobby but they view media consumption hobbies as not being social media acceptable.

honestly basically all the people most into hiking I know are the sort of nerdy, paying attention to tons of tv / movie / whatever series types of people. so if I saw it listed as a hobby I'd totally just accept it at face value

I dunno what exactly it is about it. That you can do it easily just by yourself, so you can get alone time? That it's totally the opposite of the super in-touch with the internet lifestyle they've got going the rest of the time? but I've seen it enoguh to feel like it's not just a coincidence

Hiking is a great hobby, depending on where you live. I don't see how spending a lot more time online or watching TV has anything to do with it. Most people are only ever going to go hike on their day off, but will watch TV or go online every day.

just something i noticed. lol.

if someone says in their social media bio that they are all about hiking , its most likely just a euphemism to hide that they dont have any "active or active-learning" hobbies, only passive ones like consuming netflix/media or consuming foods at restaurants ("foodies")

if someone mentions camping then i am more inclined to believe that they really be about that life including hiking. but usually these types dont even feel they have a need to mention it on their social media bios in the first place lol.

nothing wrong with the hobby. I just get the vibe that like 95% of people who claim to be into hiking on social media just do so to seem more interesting because they dont have any real active/adventurous hobbies that are otherwise cool to mention on social media but still want to give of that vibe.

Not saying this is always the case. but like i said, its pretty much nearly always confirmed if you know the person IRL how they really spend most of their time lol

Hiking is involving, but you can do it on your own without needing to develop a certain level of skill first. You just need to be able to prepare and walk. In that sense, it's ideal for media heavy nerds who still appreciate the outdoors.

As someone who doesn't have hobbies, I would never. Because then you'd have to go hiking when they ask. And that's terrible.

I don't watch television either though. So I would never say my ideal date is something like movie night. Because then you'd have to watch a romcom or a crappy horror film. And that's awful.

Hiking is a pretty common physical activity among the media types because of its low initial skill requirement and no need for major specialized equipment.

This probably does make a common profile fib because if they were ever pressed on it they could competently perform, unlike something like soccer (need skill) or cycling (need a decent bike), but its low barriers to entry make it actually popular too.

You'd be surprised. An alarming amount of people I've encountered answer that question with "sleeping" or "chilling".

Also, I can imagine some people sincerely like hiking, as a long walk (especially in nature) can be surprisingly relaxing and stress-relieving.
What I do laugh at however is when people try to tell themselves it's an actual sport, by calling it POWER WALKING!

Can confirm. When somebody asks me my hobbies I basically just say hiking/walking and less often video games because I don't even really consider it a hobby myself... So yeah I'm basically an intrestless loser

I've done a ton of hiking...not this year so much.. But I have gone on hundreds of Hikes.
~Since the advent of Social Media I've noticed when I get home I am instantly brought down a little if I check that shit out.

I haven't had a TV for watching TV in about 20+ years.

Oh obviously more intense hiking requires advanced skills and equipment. But in the realm of outdoor activities, moderate hiking is still on the lower end of developed skillsets and equipment.

Like if I say I like to garden, they are gonna expect me to know about plants and have a garden. If I say soccer, I should at least be rec soccer good, have a ball, cleats, and shinguards. If I say hiking, I can pass so long as I have a sturdy set of shoes and know the names of a few trails nearby. Unless they really are into hiking themselves, any shortcomings will never come up.

Ummm, not sure where you go hiking or when. But Hiking requires skills...that why Rangers are constantly pulling lost Yuppies out of the woods.

But ya, Appropriate footwear, hiking clothing which means no Cotton. A quality Backpack. Maps Compass. Proper lighting with a backup. Water and iodine tablets. Some form of Food. etc..etc...You always have to assume you will spend the night. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Yall acting like im hating on the hiking hobby as a whole and acting like it aint a real hobby lol. It is a real hobby and im sure its very enjoyable.
