The movie doesn't even have to revolve around werewolves, can involve regular wolves, just like The Grey or whatever that movie with Liam Neeson was.

Just had this thought... drawing a blank on a lot of potential stuff here, including Netflix movies I've seen over the years whose titles I've forgotten.

I can only remember having seen films like Silver Bullet and Van Helsing at the moment and I know there's stuff I'm forgetting.

Thoughts...?

Sorry other "normal/house" doggos and scary doggos-- like Cujo-- you are not a part of this thread.

(Were)Wolves only.

Edit: You know what, shit, guys-- feel free to include video games, too. Such as Skyrim. Playable or not.

Sorry for the slow reply; my internet is absolute trash right now and I keep having to go afk.

Generally speaking the more bestial, sporadic, and animalistic something is, the less frightening i tend to find it and this applies like... 10 times over to werewolves. If the werewolf is aware of what they are and not a complete idiot, they instantly become exponentially less dangerous. They're typically only a threat during a couple of nights a month. They tend to operate similarly to actual wildlife but more agressive/strong, which is not actually that difficult to work around, especially if there is only one or a couple of them (it is largely dependent on your location, and in most environments the human will have the upper hand and has to really fuck up to end up a victim). And... They either turn you, which does suck of course just like every other contagious curse (and frankly is simultaneously easier to live with/mitigate and less often an interference in one's life compared to most other curses and frankly, a large number of non-supernatural diseases at that)...

Or they rip you apart, which is so... vanilla slasher, but even often absent of sadistic intent... and I've never found slasher stuff unsettling even when there's a deliberate sadistic element to the attacker. Like... the intellect and opposable thumbs of a human alone makes a human predator inherently worse to the point where fearmongering about a moon-maddened dog you have to kill w/silver seems like a step back.

Like... Just take the typical comparison to vampires. As a vampire, your condition is more debilitating, less manageable, it's actively screwing with you every moment day and night, it confers more weaknesses, and in some cases it warps your mind permanently. Sure, you've got some devastating attributes, but vampirism is just flat out worse do deal with.
And from a human victim's perspective, vampires are more dangerous. They are usually smarter, stealthier, harder to hide/get away from, and some can fuck with your head so that you will not merely give up, but actively aid them. And vampires are a nightly and in some instances, CONSTANT threat. And they can be just as gruesome in their violence, anyway.

I think that conceptually, werewolves probably used to be much scarier when access to silver was limited for most people and firearms, especially more modern accurate ones, didn't exist. If i were to make a werewolf horror story, it certainly would not take place in modern times.

...
It probably doesn't help that I've been attacked by multiple large dogs at once and managed to scare them off with an umbrella and some pebbles... bestial minds can be easily taken advantage of. Like... I just don't find most animals to be particularly scary, I guess.

But I think setting a story in the right time/place or tweaking the concept to a fair degree has potential.

Why is it always wolves? Are wolves a common threat in the 1800s or whenever they came into parlance?

I'd say The Ghost and the Darkness, but that's a Lion.

This scene would be considered cheesy by today's CG standards, but just take a moment to appreciate the fact that that entire transformation sequence was shot entirely using practical effects.

Also, that was II, not V. V was the one where the cute girl uses her vagine to hide her secret wolf-nature and gets a bunch of people killed because everybody thinks with their penis.

I don't find werewolves scary, just sad when they can't control their change, or can't control themselves when changed. Wolves are not scary at all either, just missunderstood and vilified by farmers etc.

Considering how many werewolf movies I've seen over the years, I think I'd have something. However, while a lot of the designs are really cool, most aren't particularly scary.

Dog Soldiers was neat for its tall, misshapen wolfmen design, but they didn't look as great in action.

The Ginger Snaps films had these buff gorilla-like werewolves that were neat, but I can't remember if it was the same design in all three films... and honestly only the second and first films are worth watching whereas it's the third that goes super-heavy on the wolves.

Oh, then Late Phases -- which, by the way, is fantastic -- had these weird as fuck werewolves where their heads looked kinda alien.

And I guess Bad Moon's design was pretty cool, although a little basic.

I'm not actually sure i've seen a werewolf themed horror movie. My primary exposure to them is through fantasy or urban fantasy stuff like oz from buffy or remus lupin from harry potter where they're basically just presented as diseases or curses.
