A candidate for the Gaston County Board of Education responded to controversial posts he recently shared to his Facebook page. Gastonia resident Jim England joins two others in running against Dot Guthrie, who has served the Gastonia Township on the school board since 2013.

Over the summer, England reposted several questionable photos. On one occasion, England shared an altered photo of Lori Lightfoot the first Black female mayor of Chicago -- which criticized Lightfoot over the high crime rate in Chicago. England reposted the meme and wrote, looks like a dumb monkey.

England stood by his Facebook remarks. Generally what I post is the damn truth. Its just a fact. We cant cover up the truth, England said. England said he didnt call Lightfoot a monkey because shes Black. Its not because of her color. Ive seen white people who look like monkeys, England said.

Sharing a photo of a Black man punching a white man at a protest in St. Louis, Missouri, England wrote, the Black bastards need to be shot.

Though England still agreed with his post, he admitted the word bastard was harsh.
He was attempting murder, is what I call it, England said. I feel like I used a pretty rough word there.

I sometimes do give people the benefit of the doubt that, should they have grown up in a particularly color-blind or non-diverse community they might not understand the context for why calling a black person a monkey is worse than doing the same for a white person, but...
