Coworker tells them to pull it up over their nose.

Their response was literally "I like breathing air, not carbon monoxide"

Jesus H, I havent had a science class in like 14 years but even I know just how moronic that statement was.

If they're getting CO accumulating in their mask, they should probably refrain from smoking in it.

I am pretty sure they said Monoxide. However it could have been "dioxide" which while true in a sense is still stupid.

I get this crap nonstop, every day. I work as a COVID-19 screener. It's unfathomable. I counter it to a degree by refusing to let people in or screen them until they put on a mask properly first but I shouldn't have to tell grown adults (usually the same people, over and over again!) that wearing a mask around your ne k, carrying it in your pocket, or uncovering your nose means that you are putting yourself and the people around you, including ME, the person who HAS to break social distancing to screen you, in danger.

Yes. A sizable percentage of respiratory infections enter the body through the eyes, which masks do nothing to protect, and any sub-airtight mask isn't going to provide complete protection against nearby droplets. As everyone with any idea what they're talking about has been saying from the beginning, masks do more to protect others than yourself, since they work well for capturing most of the droplets we breathe out and also help to slow down the air we exhale (meaning droplets don't carry as far).

... A mask is designed to protect other people from you, not you from other people. For the most obvious example, a surgeon wears a mask to prevent their germs from getting into the body of the patient they're operating on. If I am wearing a mask and the person I come in contact with is not and starts breathing all over my hands/arms/face while I take their temperature/etc (some of them even touch me when I've repeatedly asked them not to), then I am the one at risk.

Proper pandemic etiquette: assume you are contagious and that to prevent spreading your assumed illness to others, put on a mask (ideally also wear a face shield and gloves, they can be purchased in packs), don't come close unless you have no choice, minimize physical contact with people, surfaces, and objects, wash/sanitize your hands before and after any sort of public contact, keep an eye out for even minor symptoms, don't linger overmuch in public spaces, avoid people at high risk, do not pick up products you aren't going to buy, sanitize your commonly-used devices/buttons/switches/knobs/writing implements/tools with hydrogen peroxide solutions.

It is also a good idea not to eat or drink in public spaces, and neer, never sneeze into your hands; use the crook of your arm. Press switches and open doors with your sleeve/elbow/waist if possible. Keep a spare mask on your person in case the one you're using breaks. Remember that you're doing it to protect other people and therefore your own good health is not a relevant excuse.

I imagine if they breathe in through the nose and exhale through the mouth the mask will be performing exactly how it's supposed to from what everyone has been saying about how they are supposed to work.

Probably even more effectively since the ridge of the nose is the more compromised portion of the seal anyway.

There are people who can't do this stuff (people in wheelchairs can't push open doors with their waist, people with cognitive impairments have trouble wearing PPE and following all advice, people who need oxygen cannot wear masks, etc), so if you are able to, you are obligated to in order to protect those who can't. It's worth pointing out that the people who most struggle with these advisements tend to be in the groups at most risk.

If you have any questions this did not cover, I can try and answer them.

Honestly this was most of the people wearing masks at the closest WalMart even before they became mandatory there. And now? Yep still most of the people wearing masks.

At least now it's because they have to wear it to go in. Like I don't agree with pulling it down or that 'logic' but it boggles my mind why they'd wear a mask to do that (or pull it all the way down, there's that too) when it wasn't required to wear one. And only about half the people in there were wearing one.

Hypothetically, yes. There have been a couple studies done that find that breathing like that can yield comparable effects (at least in terms of protecting others) even if the nose is uncovered. That said, you're proposing that people maintain full conscious awareness and control over their breathing for the entire time they're wearing the mask (which can very easily be several hours), as well as that they breathe gently enough to not force some air out of the nose (since the nose isn't sealed off while breathing through the mouth). It's also going to do very little to contain coughs/sneezes. Perhaps more significantly, that's almost impossible to assess compliance of, meaning enforcing mask mandates becomes much harder and people would absolutely take advantage of that to get away with wearing their masks more comfortably, effectively undermining the entire effort to get people to wear masks.

It mostly works on paper, but it's not at all a practical strategy to promote and employ in the real world.

I don't think masks are the end all be all 100% effective thing to stop the spread of covid.

But...if better options existed for people going out and about, we'd be using them, as long as they were as feasible as wearing a mask, which is simple.

Certainly they help to some extent, or else, if they were completely useless I doubt we'd be told to use them large scale.

In my personal life, I HATE wearing a mask, but I would never dream of going into somebody elses house and intentionally not following their rules. And, I have to wear a mask for 7-8 hours a day myself so certainly people can do it for much smaller, intermittent, amounts of time. If I don't want to wear a mask, I don't do the activity, and I also don't complain. If I want to do the thing enough, or it is essential(groceries) I wear it without complaining.

I limit the number of activities I do that require a mask so I don't have to wear one. Whatever bullshit I would be doing before I've replaced with walks at the park/woods that I don't need a mask for and can easily socially distance while doing.

Yeah, who cares about killing people when wearing a mask makes you uncomfortable? It's the same bullshit justification that people who go around spreading STDs make when they refuse to use condoms, but at least in that case the other party can refuse to have sex with them.
