so a couple years ago Brawlout came out, and it seemed like a Smash-type indie game with a mostly original cast, but featuring characters from Guacamelee, Dead Cells, Yooka-Laylee and Hyper Light Drifter. It was ok.

then in 2018 there was Indie Pogo, which had all these guys


and will apparently add these guys

Haven't played that one but I definitely will once Octodad is added in.

but now on top of that there's apparently ANOTHER indie fighting game coming out called Bounty Battle

tbh I don't recognize many of those characters aside from Guacamelee, Dead Cells and Blasphemous, but the art style looks pretty professional and fluid. Here's the character list:

So anyway my point is, while I'm definitely all for the idea of indie crossover fighting games, I kinda wish we could get like one that brings them all together? Like BB looks great but I know the characters in IP quite a bit more. Idk I think the idea has a lot of potential but it seems like there's several different indie companies trying to compete to be the Smash of indie fighters

after looking at the actual list I think I sort of recognize like half of it but a couple are just game names I know and I have no idea about the character itself

but for now i like different games testing out different mechanics

See like that's what I mean too, like if we could get one game that had all the big ones instead of them being spread so thin, we'd have a huge franchise potential on our hands

Juan and Raz are the only characters I recognise from the Bounty Battle roster, but I think that's on me not knowing my indie characters very well. Then again, there are so many indie characters that even the most knowledgeable gamer isn't going to know all of them.

Is there any chance of Shantae or Hat Kid being added? Maybe even Sans, but he's in Smash, so he doesn't need an indie Smash. I would also like Robin from Iconoclasts, but I'm going to be realistic and say she's unlikely.

Honestly given how obscure a lot of those characters are, I don't think Iconoclasts is too far out there

I'd love to see Hat Kid and Shantae, as well as favorites like Hollow Knight, Madeline and Octodad, but given that a couple characters are already listed as DLC it's hard to say if they'll add more. Maybe if the game is really successful?

yeah just watched gameplay too

the 1v1 stuff looks mostly fine but with 4 players it's kind of hard to follow. One stage in particular characters were literally behind the healthbars while flat on the ground, which just made everything worse.

I think there's still potential (I remember Brawlout really sucking at first but getting decent enough after a bunch of patches) but I'm worried

so it's looking like Indie Pogo is going to be the go-to for indie fighting. It probably has the biggest selection of iconic indie characters (particularly from games I never thought I'd see represented, like VVVVVVV and Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy). The gameplay also looks a lot smoother

Downsides are that it's unfortunately still PC-only and I'm not a HUGE fan of the 8-bit art style because it just feels pretty overdone at this point

Possibly because Autumn Games owns the Skullgirls IP rather than Lab Zero or any of its former members (which has now ironically saved the franchise from extinction after Mike Z literally destroyed the company), they must be more protective than most.

It would be cool if there was a 'professional' version of MUGEN. Like, someone made a good engine and put out a design spec with a license that allowed anyone to make a character, release it as DLC, and keep most/all of the profit, with the explicit intent that other IP owners would make their characters playable.

It'll never happen, but it would be great.
