It's completely different, it goes from a fast beeping sound to the stock censor sound TV shows use for bad words

It's the go sound, and no it doesn't just sound the same at a different pitch. The original is kinda a ringing effect, the new one is just a flat tone.

more than impact on the game itself (because yeah that's pretty minimal) I'm more baffled why this even happened. What was wrong with the old sound effect? Why does the new one sound so lazy? it's not like they replaced all the other sound effects in the game or anything

I just...how does this impact your enjoyment of the game at all? There's a million reasons why a sound may sound different in different environments, why they may have changed it, etc. Laziness is probably not one of them. Neither tone is something that cannot be produced with a couple of clicks on a sound editing application.

If this is some other version of the game, then it's likely that a .wav file just got misplaced, and a high pitched tone is a reasonable choice for a go signal (see mario kart).

But really, the primary issue is why you are concerning yourself with this as if it's some sort of controversy lol.

It's the cycle of every game release that I just despise

The part leading up to or just before release where people go through every bit of prerelease material or leaked content and pick it apart maniacally

Reminds me of Puddlegate for Spider-Man on the PS4

It's just an edited ROM file, no reason to think a sound effect was misplaced. In fact, I can probably get it myself. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say the original sound file didn't play nice with the emulator so they put something else in. The fact that they didn't rework the heatwave blur and some stuff is stretched for widescreen suggests this was a pretty small budget, and probably put together pretty quickly. This does show that Nintendo has been holding off giving us N64 games though, and I'll be interested to see what modders can do with ROM injection. I suspect we'll be sold an emulated copy of Ocarina of Time some time in the future... but we'll see.

The sound effect is probably right here: https://soundeffects.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Mario_Sunshine
Which is just a bunch of sounds ripped from the game.

I'm still buying it though. It was pretty clear from the initial trailer that this collection was pretty slap dash, and the issues are fairly minor overall.

this is what i'm thinking.

https://youtu.be/tMYaWXd1VvA?t=2587

here's what it sounds like when you run the SNES version of stickerbrush symphony through poor emulation. you'll notice notes trail on and don't have certain effects kick in.

what this sounds like to me is that the same effect is being used in both instances, but an amount of vibrato is being applied to the GCN version.

Personally I think most of the anger has two parts 1) the game/ title was leaked early and 2) there were like no releases scheduled when it was leaked. These two things fueled rampant speculation that this could be full fledged remakes as a holiday title, along with the inclusion of Galaxy 2. Or 64 might be a touched version of the DS remake with the 30 extra stars/ new levels. Or even ports with nice QoL improvements like something to help with blue coins. Then it turned out to be what might be the absolute bare minimum to justify this collection, which probably would have been fine had people not been hyped. The fanbase would probably have said "huh, that's neat" and moved on.

And now it's raising a question: is this why there's no N64 on NSO? Are we going to get something like this for Zelda next year with OoT?

Yeah I don't fault folks for being disappointed but I never expected this collection to be anything more than "okay here's a few of the big 3D mario games bundled together and playing as they were at their release"

Some people I feel got hyped up for something that just wasn't promised. I saw a bunch of folks saying stuff like "It's all 4 major 3D mario games rebuilt in the Odyssey engine!" or similar stuff, and it's like, guys that was never even suggested or hinted at and that would probably take a ton of work to put together.

The issue is the experience is worse across the board. SM64 and SMS are noticeable downgrades, and even the compilation's UI had zero effort put into it. You can barely read it, as it's rendered in 720p and the games' covers look like they were resized in MS Paint.
