I think it gets overlooked now partly because of the vast number of covers they did at the time. And I think their later period has a good amount of flubs which got excused due to the overall ethos of the time, to which they really helped to contribute. I see Magical Mystery Tour as their opus though, which is their psychedelic period at its best imo. Though the White Album and Abbey Road at their best are better. They revolutionized song form and what things would appear in an album, you have these 4 dudes breaking out of this world of pop and completely going the opposite direction. From the time they started to the time they ended, they just had hits popular with even the most serious musicians - they would listen to their albums and just hear the kind of growth that went from "fuck how do you get it this catchy" to "oh shit they actually made something like this?" This was the "We're in a band and we're trying to write music, it just so happens we can actually write catchy songs!" period: Please Please Me: Ask Me Why, Love Me Do, Please Please Me, Twist And Shout (Cover), Do You Want To Know A Secret With The Beatles: All My Loving, All I've Got To Do, Not A Second Time, It Won't Be Long, Don't Bother Me A Hard Day's Night: Side A (First 7 songs were recognized hits - my favorite is I'm Just Happy To Dance With You). Side B is okay.
