The post-debate result is about the same as the outcome of a post-debate poll in 2016 after the first debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton. In that poll, 62% thought Clinton won the debate, 27% said Trump did.

Well, that's weird. I'm just going to trust my own feelings on this then. Which are: Trump won all the debates with Clinton quite easily, and lost badly tonight.

One consequence I had not seen reported on before:

Within minutes, members of the group were posting in private social media channels, calling the presidents comments historic. In one channel dedicated to the Proud Boys on Telegram, a private messaging app, group members called the presidents comment a tacit endorsement of their violent tactics.

In another message, a member commented that the group was already seeing a spike in new recruits.

I can't believe for Trump's support base that behavior like this is normal. Uhm at least Joe Biden comes off as more relatable than Hillary Clinton did right? Trump just seems to be losing what little sanity he had with each passing day.

I mean, I don't actually disagree with her.

I undeniably lean left, but In Canada, there have been times when I've supported the Conservative party, when I felt like they would do a better job.

The republican party is not a party I look at right now and think "yeah, that's a viable alternative I could consider voting for." They're comic book villains who try and stop black people from voting. They're comic book villains who just had their president refuse to say anything bad about white supremacy and try to destroy faith in democracy.

Like...yes, it's bad that the Republican party is acting like comic book villains cause now we have some comic book villains in power. But it's ALSO bad that the democrats essentially only need to campaign on "I'm not republican" to win re-election. I want people to actually compete for my support, try to win me over. Instead, republicans are lazy pieces of shit and aren't even trying, hoping they can just appeal to enough white supremacists, spread enough fake news, and stop enough black voters from voting to win without actually having a strong plan on how to govern the country. This in turn means that democratic politicians can be really underwhelming with really mediocre plans on how to govern the country and get away with it at the ballot box.

Neither side really has to present a good plan or good policies under this political climate. Like...take healthcare--Trump had 4 years, literally still has not presented a plan. Biden doesn't have much of a plan either (a "public option" that sounds a lot like already existing medicaid, but maybe middle class people can buy into it now). And nobody is focused on the health care part of the debate last night cause the rest of the debate was a giant car crash people can't look away from.

I think Pelosi's point was that the Republican Party leadership needs to be stronger so it can stop the crazies from actually winning elections and wielding power. Letting Trump and his followers take over was (and still is) something that they shouldn't have gone along with. The only flaw in Pelosi's thinking is that she's assuming that the GOP elites actually care about the damage they're allowing to happen.

Opposition doesnt need to be a binary left/right or three-way left/right/centre split. There are healthy democracies where the splits are along different ways. This can backfire, here in Ireland until like, this year, the dominant parties were just different flavours of centre-right. Personally having grown up in the UK, with my entire family from the North East, seeing the damage the centre-right can do, a centre-left period if prosperity then looking on from the EU in horror at the immediate chaos the right wrought when they got power, I dont think the right has much to add to society and Ill never vote for a right wing party in either country. I wouldnt be sad to see that ideology fade entirely. It doesnt mean the death of democracy or a lack of options.

In America, its possible that part of the reason the republicans went to the far-right to differentiate themselves from the centre-right democrats. The democrats have failed to fill the gap on the left, but if they moved left its entirely possible that theyd bring the republicans back towards the centre.

The Republicans moved far right because there was a huge "grassroots" movement demanding they do so (the Tea Party) and they realized they could still win elections while being more extreme. That's in addition to what you say - the Republican party is based primarily on opposing the Democrats so of course they will drift that way. But because of that there is no guarantee they will come back towards the center, especially when they've found electoral success on the fringe and fascist policies of suppression win elections. They'll only move back to the center if they start losing elections en mass. That's why the Democrat strategy is to hold the center, and that might not even work.

I do think Trump did mean to say stand down, since that entire part of the debate was a total clusterfuck and he said twice while all three of them were talking over each other that he would denounce and tell a white supremacist group to stand down and that he just wants peace. He was specifically asked to tell them to stand down. Like if you watch that entire part back, you can really take in how fucking chaotic it was.

Much as I fucking loathe defending Trump and I want him out, he's denounced the KKK and white supremacy in general before multiple times during his presidency, so I don't think he wouldn't denounce them again unless he's suddenly that much more concerned with having their support unlike the last three years because of the election coming up. He did said he would denounce them while talking over both Biden and the moderator and was asking who specifically he wants to denounce.

HOWEVER, it's his own stupid fault for taking the entire debate to the point that three grown ass men are all shouting over one another and none of them are able to take in anything that the other is saying and so you get a moment like this that is a disgusting soundbite, and I can't even feel bad that it's being used against him right now because it's his fault it broke down like this.

What is the worst is that because it was so fucking chaotic that we couldn't get a civil, direct answer from Trump. And that's all Trump's fault.

However, he hasn't immediately come out after and said "I misspoke, I do denounce the Proud Boys and white supremacy." Unless they're hoping to address that at the next debate which is fucking stupid.
