Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

I feel like Guile would be a more skilled fighter than Mario if they were to go 1 on 1. In Smash, Mario usually has multiple opponents, so it's easier for him to fight without having someone on his back at all times. This scenario benefits Guile because he's more used to 1 on 1 battles than Mario is. Mario has better manouevreability, but Guile takes advantage of his own weaker mobility to charge his special moves. Sonic Booms are faster and have better range than Mario'r fireballs, so Mario would have to get up close to fight, and Guile can use a flash kick to knock Mario away again.

This is assuming there are no power-ups, but if there were, Mario would have the advantage because he has more familiarity with them than Guile.

Mario. Even without powerups there's way too big of a strength difference here.

I think it was decided that he would get an inventory of them like in Mario 3 or whatever, anyway.

Even assuming the weakest reasonable base form of Mario (Super Mario RPG, no power-ups or items), you have Ultra Fire at minimum and surviving being tossed miles from Bowser's Castle by Exor. Not to mention the sheer athletics advantage Mario has in any environment other than 'plain field', since the times that you see Guile move are... limited at best. Bare minimum strength feet of 'able to toss 64 Bowser' also impresses me far more than Guile's showings of 'lost to Juri' or scaling him up to a little underneath Chun Li.

This is, of course, assuming Mario doesn't have any power-ups (which... I mean if Cloud gets any materia at all, Mario should get power-ups), or that this isn't a Popeye situation where Mario can just find his power-ups. In which case this is a rather bad stomp.

Though yeah while Guile is likely a better martial artist, Mario has simply dealt with more crazy stuff even without power ups on top of being extremely agile. You could stretch things though if you want to bring Marvel VS Capcom lore into the mix but then you can bring Super Mario RPG stuff in so...I dunno
