nope. for many of these people it's the first time in their lives that they're getting real attention and feel like they have power. human nature dictates they won't give up that feeling just because they were catastrophically wrong. they'll be wrong again of course and go back to whatever dumb lives they had, just this time without trump.

This is why democrats cant gain supporters. Instead of listening and trying to persuade people to your side, youd rather say you were wrong fuckers admit it! Fucking admit you were wrong!

Shortly after Trump's election, a lot of people who didn't support him were like "Maybe we should try to understand the people who voted for him better and consider their perspective. Maybe things won't even be so bad as we feared under Trump's administration."

However, over the past few years it has become apparent that this stance didn't help matters at all, as Trump's words and actions continued to divide people more and more, and the overwhelming majority of his followers made little to no attempt to make peace with who they view as 'the left' (i.e. everyone who does not vote Trump). Trump and his supporters actually continued to mock him and were apparently fine with anything he did, as long as they didn't have to admit that maybe this divided society and the widespread consequences of his actions wasn't ideal. No, that would be 'showing weakness'. Perish the thought.

So after a few years, those who don't support Trump simply stopped caring about reconciliation, as it seemed it was no use trying have a debate with Trump's supporters, especially as Trump did and said more and more to divide American society, yet refused to take responsibility for it. His actions (or perhaps inactions) toward Covid-19 was simply the last tree trunk that broke the camel's back.

So now it has come to this. Red vs Blue, openly expressing their disgust for each other. Well done everyone. Putin is probably laughing his ass off everytime he watches the news, and popping the vodka bottle once either side becomes publicly violent toward the other.

The sunk cost fallacy is part of it. Another part is that they legitimately fear the left (in no small part due to media, as well as a small handful of extreme left nutjobs that are made as the poster child for the entire left by some of said media). They (and their media) see some loud nutcase pushing something like the 1619 project or something as being EVERYONE on the left, when most people on the left actually quite hate that particular example from the simple perspective of it being both bad history and bad teaching practices.

But yeah, they are scared. Scared enough that they are not blind to the authoritarian ****, but rather see it as the only way to "save" America from itself. The end justifies the means and all that.

I am sure there are a handful who actually do want something more sinister from the current president's continuation (it is these people to really be worried about, as they are also the handful that are likely to form militias/terrorist groups when things really hit the fan), but most of them are just dealing with the more sane reasons mentioned in the topic thus far.

He campaigned on making American "great" again. He objectively did not. In fact he made it much worse. Trump supporters are now akin to climate science deniers.

Destroying everything is the point.

Trump has allowed a deadly disease to ravage the country unchecked and promotes spreading it by hosting multiple congregations of his faithful.
He has stoked the fires of conflict and pitted one American political party against the other, declaring Democrats his primary enemy and encourages hate groups.
Attacks and discredits freedom of the press and threatens journalists with legal consequences for reporting unfavorably to him and his regime.
Ordered a chemical weapon attack on US citizens for his political benefit.
He has plunged us further and further into debt with nothing to show for it but a puffed up stock market (numbers on a screen for the benefit of rich people).
He has alienated our allies and trade partners and cozied up to totalitarian regimes.
He has eliminated protections for our environment, initiated wasteful projects to actively destroy the environment (the wall) and made climate change denialism and inaction his official plan.
Allows foreign powers to target and issue bounties for US soldiers without any repercussions.
Installed unqualified and biased judicial officers with the intent of depriving and rolling back rights for women and minority groups.

And a huge chunk of this country thinks this is a good job and are eager for more.

If you were a foreign saboteur working to bring down America from within, its difficult to conceive of doing a more thorough job than Trump has done.

He and the Republican Party who have enabled him should be regarded as traitors to America and to humanity. Vote them out, vote them all out as aggressively as possible, at every level of government. It sucks to write the Democrats a blank check to be sure but there is a clear and present danger to this country that demands the most extreme responses available to us.

Trump doesn't stand for anything, he manipulated hateful people into voting for him to fluff his ego and develop a cult of personality. These people always held these views they're just glad to have someone to push them on their behalf. If Trump thought he could have become president as a progressive democrat he would have done.
