Apparently this film has been "out" for some time as it was premiered at Sundance back in January.

RT has a split response (57% on 14 reviews) and you know the Nazis are going to piggyback on that.

I skimmed this topic, but has anyone yet presented a convincing argument for why Pan and Alice are "white culture"?

it's clear that these people don't even care about the story, the characters, or how faithful they are to their source material(s)

otherwise they'd also take issue with Alice from Alice in Wonderland and Peter from Peter Pan now being siblings, and their stories being intertwined with some kinda real world backdrop, and the final product is something totally new

This was my initial take away and surprised you're the first and only person to have mentioned it. All these fragile crybaby racists, whining about the sanctity of the original stories because the cast isn't waspy enough for them, and not one has complained about how they've merged two distinct and unrelated pieces of fiction.

Personally, I thought it looked interesting. Everyone always complains about remakes and retellings, but I thought this looked like a good middle ground between doesnt something new and using established characters.

This could have been a movie about legit Peter Pan and legit Alice Lidell in a scenario where they're siblings and each goes through their respective "real" fantasies. The concept is already off the rails of each original story, so what's the point of complaining that the characters aren't white enough?

I seem to recall that both Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland have dozens of adaptations over the years where they're played by white people so it's not exactly a concept hurting for representation.

Unless someone has a convincing argument that Peter and Alice must be white because of the inherent "white culture" that's in each work.

...

Then again, isn't there an underlying colonialism theme in Pan? I guess that's pretty white.

i think the one and only thing this is good for is a long hard look at these people and their current language. i think it's a little too easy to assume that these are people with multiple accounts instead of just this many, and it's a dangerous assumption as well. but here it all is, in varying attempts at subtlety. it's appalling, and these are actually ideas that they're trying to get people to believe.

there are so many things that youtube's auto-censor should pick up and don't. i linked an adl.org definition for the number 1488 a while ago and it ate my post. they need to update their definitions. badly.

do any of these "white culture" people ever reflect upon the fact that race via skin color is a recent concept and that many old "great" societies had entirely different standards and ways of categorizing in-groups vs out-groups? like are they aware that Romans didn't give a shit if you were black and only cared if you were a citizen?

do these people realize that allegedly homogenous white cultures killed each other in great numbers for like 2 millenia and engaged in extended wars as recently as not even a century ago? do they get that italians and irish weren't considered "white" for a long time even in the modern racial paradigm?

I hope the same thing happens here. Make Snow White a lesbian. Have an Arab-Muslim Robin Hood. Make Sleeping Beauty (and her prince) Asian. Make Pinocchio a girl and the doll maker Black. Remake Bambi with a Black voice actor. Ram it down these bigots' throats.

"Loss of Childhood Innocence" is a common theme between the two works. Kinda telling that a lot of claimed "white culture" focuses around the time when white people were kids and didn't have a care in the world.

With all works of art, I don't have a problem with this movie. I feel like the movie is simply poking fun of the past a bit. I get it. I might watch if it gets good reviews.

But I also don't see any of the comments being Nazi like or anything like that.

That's actually a pretty novel concept, an Alice in Wonderland/Peter Pan story where aspects of their adventures are reflected in the real world adversity they face. I haven't seen a crossover story like this, and the spin on it genuinely strikes me as original and inspired.

Honestly, it looks like a good movie. The kids seem like pretty good actors - the hokiest part of the trailer imo was Angelina Jolie.

It doesn't look like a bad movie. People got pissy about Ghostbusters and Ocean's Eight, and in both cases they didn't end up being super great movies - though Ocean's Eight wasn't particularly bad, just kinda eh. This doesn't look like a bad movie to me. The only point of contention I can see, given the response it's gotten, is that the Alice and Peter characters are black or interracial in this movie.

I'll wait for the reviews, but I find it hard to believe that the quality of the trailer itself is so objectionable to garner over 300 responses in this thread in 8 hours.

It was first released in January at Sundance, so there are some reviews up on RT. Not a lot, but the response has been split.

I'm saying not all of them are racist people, and logically thinking what some of them are taking exception with that isn't based on skin colour.
