That reminds me of that executive from Nestle saying that the idea of water being a human right is radical. Of course, Nestle is the same company that steals water from countries through crooked governments (and maybe private armies, I don't remember).

They are not. Like at all. Famine is not a thing in the US and hasn't been in any of our lifetimes.

If you guys are going to declare "food insecurity" starvation you might want to look up what qualifies as food insecurity under the US government's definition.

There are plentiful ways to get food to eat if you can't afford it in the US. Especially if you have children.

To compare that to poorer countries where children are literally dying in mass from hunger and malnutrition is so beyond fucking gross.

These safety nets seem real handy back when schools first shut down and a large problem was kids losing access to food they received at school

I would say the line to draw pertaining to this conversation is when a lack of food is having serious negative effects on health.

I've gone to bed hungry before with no food in the house. I wouldn't say I've ever been literally starving

For anyone interested, this is how the US justified their vote.

https://geneva.usmission.gov/2017/03/24/u-s-explanation-of-vote-on-the-right-to-food/

This resolution does not articulate meaningful solutions for preventing hunger and malnutrition or avoiding its devastating consequences. This resolution distracts attention from important and relevant challenges that contribute significantly to the recurring state of regional food insecurity, including endemic conflict, and the lack of strong governing institutions.

I wonder whos responsible for endemic conflict and lack of strong governing institutions..... It's definitely not the US and Israel.

Domestically, the United States pursues policies that promote access to food, and it is our objective to achieve a world where everyone has adequate access to food, but we do not treat the right to food as an enforceable obligation.

It's pretty humorous seeing the US government trying to justify their UN votes.

Again, enough food is produced on this planet to feed 11 billion people.

In other words, the US focuses on actually producing food for people while nations like North Korea declare it a human right to distract from the fact that people are actually starving there.

Weird to criticize market economies for producing an abundance of food instead of just copying them.

https://www.npr.org/2020/09/08/908442609/children-are-going-hungry-why-schools-are-struggling-to-feed-students

For some children, school meals may be the only ones they get in a day. And with school feeding programs reaching fewer and fewer families, Bauer worries that "children are going hungry."

I would figure this counts as starving since you can't exactly go lower than 1 meal a day. Focusing on school children right now because this is a problem that has been known for decades yet is still a problem
