Both are God tier systems but Genesis excels when it comes to action platforming which is probably the genre that speaks to me the most. Stuff like Revenge of Shinobi, Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy, Hard Corps, and Rocket Knight Adventure are just really my kinda games. That said SNES has DKC 2, Yoshis Island, and Terranigma. Choices are tough yo.

Both are great in their own ways, and if you don't play either one of them, you're missing out. Systems were pretty unique back then.

As for my favorite, even though I first had a Genesis that I really enjoyed playing, I have to go with the SNES. I'm a fan of JRPGs / Action RPGs, and anything with good exploration-based gameplay (Super Metroid being my favorite game on the system). Then you all the (other) Nintendo stuff, Rare stuff, Capcom stuff (Mega Man / X), Konami stuff (Castlevania) and many more besides.

The GEN is great for the more arcadey games of course, like shmups and the action platformers you mention, although the SNES isn't too shabby in that regard either.

You had to buy a 6 button controller to play the Fighting Games correctly on the Genesis, and it was awful.

I mean nowadays I wouldnt wanna play fighting games on either, I'd rather go straight for the arcade original versions.

I favor it because I had my Genesis for about 2 years before my SNES and already had like 40 Genesis games. I only wound up with like 25 total on SNES and closer to 60 Genesis before the next gen.

Virtually everything on Genesis is better than that shitty interactive movie and example of how Akira Toriyama can only draw Goku or Trunks with different hair colors as a protagonist.

The correct answer is Kirby Super Star.

Mega Man X also would have been acceptable.

Disagree. Fighting games were awful on the Genesis because of the controller issue. I get it though not a lot of you guys are fighting gamers so it doesn't effect any of y'all.

NEO GEO was the best for fighting games.

Neo Geo didn't have Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat or Killer instinct. there were also Clay Fighters and Slam masters and other wresting games that required more than 3 buttons to be good at.

Sorry but Genesis lose for me big time because of that back in the days.

Because the SNES had 6 buttons to play with Mortal Kombat's game that used 5 buttons.

Not starting an argument, but care to list some? I can't recall many. I know people like to throw Aladdin in there but two different companies made the two versions.

It just depends on what genre and what you're looking for imho

The Genesis had a bigger resolution which is really important for some games, the one that comes to mind for me is zombies ate my neighbors. It's really hard if you can't see more of the screen. Earthworm jim is another I believe, especially certain levels in the second (iirc)

The Genesis was also generally better if you needed speed, like in shmups

But the snes had a lot more colors and bigger pixels and the sprite rotation stuff which made some games better looking on it

I don't know the exact answer to that, but I've read that Nintendo basically never wanted to move past the NES and only did the SNES because of the competitive pressure from Genesis/Sega and NEC in Japan. And the SNES was developed to me "modular" in the sense that they anticipated the expansion chips that were put in carts to enhance what the base console could do.

So I assume it's a cost thing.

also, technically the SNES has a higher resolution than the Genesis, its just not commonly used in practice -- the only example I can think of is Seiken Desetsu 3's title screen. I think there were a few other Japan-only games that used it. Like that one about kids that get ship wrecked on an island, I think its kind of an adventure game
