Someone is bragging to me right now about how they're really funny and winning at Cards Against Humanity and its annoying me. I've always thought that game was kind of dumb and luck based.

Yeah. You have to know what your group will find funny. It's also luck based with the cards you get, but many games have an element of luck to them and you can still be good at them

This. It's mainly just knowing how to pander to the people you're playing with.

There's definitely a strong element of random chance involved (you can only play the cards you have in your hand), but you can still exploit things if you're clever.

That being said, being "really good" at CAH might say less about your sense of humor and more about what sort of friends you have.

Humour is too subjective, but I think there's definitely "smart people laughs" and "dumb people laughs". Like that Pac Man "guzzling" card... you have to be emotionally 13 to think that's good. We actually took out the "for teenage edgelords" cards because they ruined the game. I never picked them no matter what, because I just found them annoying. It wasn't many though. But it was the trying too hard to be offensive ones that went into childish territory.

I've played w/ friends a few times and won every single time, so apparently.

I'm pretty good at coming up w/ really fucked up jokes. Then again, only played like 5 times so it's not a large sample size. *shrug*

The game's definitely partly luck based. There is some strategy too though, at least in as much as knowing when to "throw" a round w/ a card you have no use for b/c the cards you "have plans for" wouldn't be much more use anyway, and when you have a golden opportunity to use those juicy cards you've been saving up.

You can definitely be good at it, but skill in it only goes so far.

If it bothers you that much, you could always just play Apples to Apples instead. It's basically the same game, but aimed more at a family or general audience, without the goal of trying for offensive humor.

The two main tricks to CAH are knowing your base and having the cards that work for said base. If either one is off, you're going to have a bad time.

Same.

Usually whenever I played, we'd start out keeping score but by the end no one was really paying attention, so we couldn't have told you who "won" if you asked. Because winning was never really the point.

As others have said, there's pretty much no skill involved in the game itself, just in knowing what your friends will find funny (and, by extension, being better at making your friends laugh than your other friends are). Drop him into a group of strangers, and odds are he wouldn't do nearly as well.
