Worst designed final boss fight in a video game I have experienced in a long long time. I'm talking about the final final fight with Munakata and his bajillion dodge and block machine bodyguards. Holy fuck was it obnoxious.

Been playing the entire Yakuza series recently. I already beat 0 a few years ago and loved it and decided to play all the games in the series this year before I play the much anticipated Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

While the story in these games have always been entertaining in an over the top way, the gameplay has been subpar to ok at best in all the games I've played so far. (Which is Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2 (the best one), 3 and 4 which I just beat). Even 0, by far the best one had just a serviceable gameplay overshadowed by its amazing plot.

So what can I hope from 5 and 6 in terms of gameplay? Does it still harbor jank and clunkiness?

5 still uses the same engine as 4 so it's a bit better.
6 uses an entirely new engine that is controversial to the fanbase. You'll either think it's a huge upgrade or a huge downgrade.

Pretty much everyone agrees that Daigo should have been the last fight.

I haven't played 6 yet, but Kiwami 2's combat system is similar, right? Probably a good sign if he thinks it's the best one.

Missed that. 6, Kiwami 2, and Judge Eyes uses the Dragon Engine so he'll like it in that case.

If you liked Kiwami 2's gameplay then you should feel at home with 6, though it's absolutely a rougher and jankier version of it since it was the debut of the Dragon Engine.
5's gameplay is largely like 4 but with more refinement - still nowhere close to 0 of course but it does have the most heat moves in the series so there's plenty of spectacle to keep you entertained.

0 has by far the best gameplay in the series IMO. K2 is probably second. Y3 is the worst in terms of combat at least, everyone blocks way too much. Still like that one for the Okinawa segments though.

Overall ranking

0 > K2 > 4 > 5 > 6 > 3 > K1

But none of them are bad really.

IMO the gameplay gets better with each game in the series, the one exception being the engine jump which puts 6 and Kiwami 2 behind 0 and potentially 5 for me. By Judgment they've got it all figured out and it feels like it's back on top. (Obviously Like a Dragon is its own thing and can't really be compared to any of the other games at all, but it's pretty darn good.)

Honestly I facepalm harder whenever Kiryu or one of the series protagonists throws away a fully loaded gun close to the enemy's proximity and somebody close or dear to theirs ends up getting shot or worse flat out killed.

So rubber bullets while such an asspull of a plot element, at least saved Akiyama.

I'm in full suspension of disbelief mode at this point with the series so I'm ok with it as long as Kiryu does throw away a loaded gun next to an enemy again. I mean I believe they would have learned by now.
