Rise of Skywalker. When I saw him betray them, I assumed Oh, its like hes just tricking the First Order and hes going to bail them out later. Hes a nice guy! He gave Rose back her talisman!

And then he betrays them for real and just... disappears. Where did he go? Didnt he realize he had a potentially unfinished character arc?

And the entire time I watched RoS, I kept waiting for this scene to show up, and it just... never did.

Its weird... right? Am I the only one who thought that was weird?

Overlooking the fucking spoilers right in the headline, I kinda expected that this would be the case. The whole side-mission was a fucking huge waste of time and nothing about DJ's character arc suggested he'd play a large role in Rise. Granted, him not appearing at all just makes that shit worse in hindsight but, given how widely criticized that whole thing was, it's unsurprising that they moved away from it.

I still haven't seen Rise, but I'm really not expecting much, although -- other than Rose & Finn's shitty sidequest -- Last Jedi was a bit better than expected, considering that TFA was the first SW movie that had me checking my watch midway through.

I didn't remember the name (since the sequel trilogy is forgettable in general), but I immediately recognized the context.

I did expect him to come back into the story again. But RoS was a bit too crowded as it was.

I'd like to see a miniseries or something that takes place after RoS, so they can bring him back. And also finally settle the Finn shipping wars. And also give Rey a chance to actually use that badass yellow saber.

Most of the movie's problems could be solved if they cut that sidequest out. Sure, there'd still be stuff to complain about, but it'd be less.

I was a fan of Finn x Poe. The signs were all there! =x Granted, I'm not sure what happened in Rise, I'm just assuming they didn't go that route.

They gave Finn what is essentially a genderswap to talk to so people wouldnt think hes gay, and gave Poe a lady friend to talk to for 5 minutes.

I'm sure Rose wouldn't have been in RoS if JJ could have gotten away with it

A very cowardly movie.

That said, I don't think DJ would have shown up regardless. It goes against the "point" of the character, though I disagree with what the point was.

Rewatching TLJ, I forgot how good DJ was. He made a really strong impression in his handful of scenes, though his intro felt a bit random and he didn't slide into the plot very organically.

Because they overestimate the attachment people have to individual lightsabers and don't want to get rid of Anakin's, despite virtually every Jedi in canon breaking/losing and replacing their saber repeatedly. The growing deification of lightsabers throughout the years is more a reflection of fan culture rather than the original films.

I mean, Luke getting his father's lightsaber was treated like a big deal in the OT, as well as losing it and then creating his own. It wasn't until the PT that you had Anakin losing sabers all over the place and using loaners.

It really wasn't. The receipt of his fathers lightsaber was the visual background of an exposition scene where the primary focus was his father and the Jedi, the light saber itself receives very little attention in the scene. The loss of the lightsaber is similar. The construction of a new lightsaber literally occurs completely off screen.

People remember the iconic lightsaber visual, but the direction and text of the film's don't actually emphasize the weapon all that much.

Still don't know why they decided to cut the scene with Luke finishing his lightsaber in RotJ. I'm guessing they wanted a bigger reveal for it.

The entire first act of RotJ is weird because its super memorable and iconic but nothing that's happening really makes much sense or connects to the rest of the film. The whole thing is 100% style

Not even the whole ship, even just the high ranking officers on the ship. She didn't even share that she had a plan.

It wasn't.

This was literally never established. It's never even brought up as a possibility. It's a Mandela effect that half the viewers of TLJ apparently hallucinated.

I think TLJ is a great film but the entire Holdo subplot is trash.

She did share it with the high ranking officials. She didnt tell Poe because he was out of Leias good graces after he basically sacrificed a bunch of lives to get a single W.

He was still an officer with enough pull to literally take control of the ship. She got absolutely clowned by him and it was her fault to begin with.

Not that the position of officer should have much bearing thematically. Star Wars has always been a strongly pro-war but anti-military franchise. "Good soldiers follow orders" is the opposite message it should be sending.

But the theme of The Last Jedi isnt about killing people you hate. Its about self-sacrifice to protect the ones you love. Holdos plan was to sacrifice herself to save everyone else, and she felt she couldnt tell anyone else, lest they leak the info and plans, or decide to die alongside her.

TLJ is very much a themes over narrative movie, in the same way TLoU 2 was.

The Last Jedi was my favorite of the new trilogy, but I found the new movies overall to be fairly forgettable. I think it would have been better if they had an overarching plot idea to begin with instead of two directors having a slap match across movies about the direction they think the series should go.

To exemplify how forgettable these movies were to me: who the fuck was DJ?

It's also about using a plan that should have been used in previous films if George Lucas thought it possible.
