gamefaqs is not a good forum of discussion about vpns. their primary uses, even legitimately, are about bypassing laws, copyrights, and (potentially legal) privacy infrigement. i've seen many a topic or reply axed by mods.

for absolutely legal reasons, you'd want a vpn to do what you do every day all the time but more "secure" in the modern sense to avoid personally directed ads, identify theft, dox, hacks, whatever.

Well in countries with an open internet mostly for watching other countries netflix and not getting your data stolen on public wifi. In places like China its for accessing the internet instead of the government intranet

If you care that much you probably shouldn't. Seriously if the government wants to harass innocent people for looking at boobs let them. The real criminals aren't out in teh open anyways and have something to hide.

I used one in China, but hilariously GameFAQs isn't blocked there, so when I couldn't connect I could still use this site.

It's basically like a proxy but you pay for it. A proxy is just a secur gateway you sit behind. A vpn actually encrypts all information sent between hosts. Most connections are supposed to be secure anyways. It's an extra level of protection. The vpn can still be traced back to you. Like a proxy can. A proxy is not really secure. Because you are basically sending all your data through teh proxy and people can still sniff your ip. The proxy itself can be margainalized. It's safer in ways to not bother. I'd more worry abotu the actual information that is online. And the companies controlling it and spreading misinformation with agendas. There is plenty of that out there.

I never connect to public internet at all. I guess I shouldn't bother with this then. I use my home internet or phone internet.

There are so many other ways a site or service can track you beyond just your IP that just getting a VPN alone for 'security' isn't any real use.

There really isn't much on the internet that is overly safe is the point. Don't trust the internet it's as simple as that. Get rid of malware and all of that is your best bet and don't worry about it. A lot of the stuff out there is as crooked as the people surfing it and probably moreso.
