I don't want to be part of the first wave of people with the vaccine. I mean I'll get it "EVENTUALLY" but there's too much stress on being the first testers, for the worldwide version is as worrysome as the in lab control, because you don't know what happens when it gets released from the control to the population at large, there's too many variables in the human body, and things can come up that didn't happen in a controlled environment.

Though I doubt it'll become available to me until maybe February or March. I'm also indifferent to which one I receive.

I'd still recommend getting it since most indications are that the vaccines produce a stronger immunity than natural infection, and you could also look at it as being like a booster shot.

I'm an immuno-compromised individual who hasn't left the house in almost 11 months now. I'd very much like to get a vaccine, but I might wait in quarantine a couple months to just see how it all irons out.

The VA will probably let me know when it's free for me and I'll have a better idea at that point too.

Kind of a combination of these. Obviously I want it, but I'd rather not be part of the first wave of general population next March. But I may not have a choice because my boss might want me to come back to the office asap in March, so I'll see.

I will probably have the option to do so at work eventually. I'm not a front line worker or anything but I am in healthcare so we'll likely be getting it sooner rather than later.

I've already had covid though and I'm not high risk so I might let someone who needs it more than me have it instead depending on the availability of it.

Trials for both RNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) show them as being ~94% effective.

The flu shot doesnt give you the flu. It can trigger some flu-like symptoms because theyre just your bodys immune response activating.

The worst flu I ever got, and it almost killed me, was the one year I took a flu shot. Even if there's no correlation, I'm not taking a flu shot again.

The covid vaccine seems really safe though. One of my former DVMs now works at Pfizer, and the rate of adverse side effects in animals is almost nonexistent. Couldn't tell you about human side effects, but it doesn't look like many volunteers are experiencing anything permanent.

If you're 30 you have something like a 1 in 4000 chance of dying of covid, and a considerably higher chance than that of having a really bad illness. No deaths have been linked to the vaccines in safety trials, and the side effects that they do show (aches, nausea etc) are short term and not as bad as a moderate case of covid. And that's before you factor in not killing other people by being a vector for covid.

The AE rates are absolutely greater than the standard flu shot

if you have no underlying complications and are under 40, I could virtually guarantee that there is a greater chance you'll die from a side effect than from covid (though both are extraordinarily low)

You are mistaken. See Fig. 3:
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.07.23.20160895v7.full.pdf

Perhaps you were basing this off of people appending an extra % to probabilities? I've seen a lot of people do that to falsely decrease death rates by a factor of 100.

America, and I work in a Princeton research lab that's a part of the network that's helped develop these things. We've very likely to be among the first to have it available.

I can tell you first hand the animal side effects were basically not there at all, but we didn't do the super hardcore research that the actual pharma companies did. They're all reporting the same thing though. The animals aren't getting sick from it.

This is the percentage of covid patients who die. There is a 1 in 350,000 chance that a healthy person under 30 will get covid and die from covid.* That is, at worst, the same likelihood that you'll die from a lightning strike or a dog bite. And I would again conclude that the odds you'll die from a weird injection site reaction from a vaccine are greater than the risk of death from covid overall. So, yes, getting a covid vaccination as a healthy person ~30 years of age could actually a bigger "risk" than getting covid itself.

Not that I would begrudge anyone for getting one since the risk is still extremely low, but to act like you'd have to be an idiot to not get inoculated is just factually incorrect.

The chance that you get covid is dependent on the actions we take as a society. For example, if we were to totally fail to stop covid before a vaccine was deployed (following the dumb-as-fuck herd immunity strategy) one's chance of getting covid before that would be over 50%. As is the US has had 15.5 million covid cases officially diagnosed (and that's certainly a lot less than the true number of cases), which is already almost 5% of the population. Combining that with the IFR is up down to 1 in 80000 (and probably really several times that). Meanwhile, the Pfizer safety trial had around 40k people (~half in the vaccine group) with no vaccine-linked deaths.

If you think a major trial for the most consequential disease since the bubonic plague will be administered with the same care as some CVS worker injecting 1000 people a day, I have some news for you.

Again, my point wasn't that you SHOULDN'T get the vaccine. It's that pretending like any (young and healthy) person who doesn't is a moron is just willfully ignoring basic statistics.

I'll be getting it as soon as possible. I travel a lot for work, and not being able to travel internationally for the last 9 months has put a lot of projects on hold. The sooner we get vaccines out, the sooner we can get back to rolling out new projects. As a 33 year old white male living in small town Canada, with a currently WFH job, I worry that I will be the last group of people getting the vaccine.

Especially since the government basically said they were prioritizing Natives living in the middle of the fucking arctic with no interaction with the outside world for some reason.
