I took a quick look out of curiosity and while you can find stuff on Google scholar, I couldn't find anything that I could say was in a reputable journal. And the most cited articles seem to basically just be discussions that are probably cited by all the random studies spawned in 2019/2020.

Does that "study" on Google scholar that correlated pupil diameter to ASMR experience have any validity? My guess would be probably not, but somebody looked into it lol.

I directly quoted where you said this "phenomenon" hasn't had any published scientific study, which is incorrect. Whether you want to accept these studies doesn't negate their existence. And there will no doubt be more research done on it down the line.

Idk, seems to me that there's far less reason to be suspicious about a report when it's consistently reported (always followed by the same stimulus, always the same reported effect) that has real pragmatic restrictions that make it hard to study.

The issue with ASMR is that everybody reports very different sensations, in response to very different stimuli. It should, however, be pretty damn easy to study. And if so, the very very first question someone would ask is "is this a single thing?". Throw a bunch of people in a lab and have them watch a couple of hours of video clips, some explicitly ASMR like material, some random, and have them report when they feel "it" and what effects the feel. Very simple just to look to see if there are actual commonalities in what triggers it and what types of sensations it creates.

The issue is that probably nobody wants to do this because it's immediately a shitshow and everyone who claims an ASMR response reports different feelings in response to diffetent things. Such that a reasonable summary of what the ASMR response is "when you feel something pleasant that's triggered by some external stimulus".

Binaural ero-audio has existed longer than ASMR, and is definitely a legitimate type of porn. But it's weird how it got conflated with ASMR when the latter's popularity exploded. Now it feels like ASMR doesn't even mean anything anymore, it's used for any pleasant audio experience.

Sure. Lmk how you feel about the two below.

https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0196645
(2nd study)

Materials and methods study 2
Design.
The study employed a 2 x 3 mixed design. The between-subjects variable was ASMR group (ASMR participant vs. non-ASMR participant) and the within-subjects variable was video type (control video vs. ASMR standard video vs. ASMR self-selected video). The dependent variables were: (i) the frequency of tingles experienced during each of the videos and (ii) changes in affect, heart rate, and skin conductance level for each of the two ASMR videos (calculated from the control video).

...

In Study 2, we showed that ASMR extended beyond self-reported feelings to physiological measures: specifically, reduced heart rate and increased skin conductance level in ASMR participants while watching ASMR videos. The results from both studiesat both a self-report and physiological levelare consistent with the idea that ASMR is a pleasant, calming but also activating experience. Notably, this physiological response profile differs from that of aesthetic chills, which are associated with increased heart rate [2, 13, 17]
...

A key limitation in both studies is the possibility that our findings (particularly those related to tingle frequency and affective states) reflect a demand characteristic or expectation effect; that is, ASMR participants experienced changes in affect and physiology because they expected to whereas non-ASMR participant had no such expectations.

https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0226692

Abstract
Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a sensory phenomenon commonly characterized by pleasant tingling sensations arising from the back of the head and accompanied by feelings of relaxation and calmness. Although research has found ASMR to have a distinct physiological pattern with increased skin conductance levels and reduced heart rate, the specific tingles felt in ASMR have not received much investigation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the physiology and characteristics of ASMR further by examining whether experiencing ASMR is visible from the pupil of the eye. A total of 91 participants were recruited and assigned to three different groups based on their experience of ASMR (ASMR vs. non-ASMR vs. unsure). Participants were instructed to watch a control video and an ASMR video and to report any tingling sensations by pressing down a button on the keyboard. Pupil diameter was measured over the duration of both videos using a tower-mounted eye tracker. Data was analyzed on a general level, averaging pupil diameter over each video, as well as on a more specific level, comparing pupil diameter during reported episodes of tingling sensations to pupil diameter outside of those episodes. On the general level, results revealed no significant differences between the groups. On the specific level, however, the tingling sensations experienced in ASMR were found to cause statistically significant increases in pupil diameter, demonstrating that they have a physiological basis. The results of the study further reinforce the credibility of ASMR and suggest that the tingles felt in ASMR are at the very core of the experience itself.

After reading through about 10 or so abstracts with half promising titles, these are the two I found that had any type of lab data. The rest are "exploratory questionnaire" type things and some arguments that it's basically the same as frisson (which is something I learned about in this exercise). I wouldn't be surprised these are the only studies. Well, there was an undergrad honors thesis that apparently used MRIs lol.

Still, I wouldn't take these two studies as hard evidence of anything. But hey, a couple groups more or less did exactly what you suggested.

Not everyone is into ASMR for sexual reasons, but the fact that a lot of ASMR videos could swap "ASMR" with "Porn Parody POV" and the only difference would be that the person never ends up taking off their clothes should indicate to you what the appeal to most viewers is.

I dont think the people watching sexy ASMR are watching it for the ASMR. There isn't anything sexy about ASMR.

They could be. If the goal was simply to watch something sexy, I don't know why asmr videos would be the ones someone used. But that would be enjoying asmr while also looking at some nice tits, not arousal combined with the feeling of asmr to produce some super arousal or whatever people think is going on. Like can anyone who experiences it imagine beating off while maintaining the asmr feeling? I sure as shit can't.

I think what happened is a certain chunk of the ASMR community is a bunch of lonely nerds who don't actually experience it that much, if at all. Or rather they just like the personal attention/intimacy that it emulates. And so as pretty white girls became the norm, many of them realized if they turn it into borderline risque sexy shit, it attracts more of that audience, and gets them more revenue.

Me personally, I can't stand it. Just make cool tapping noises and videos about turning pages and I'm all set lol. (Most of my favorite channels are dudes anyway.)
This is a big reason I've been noticing. Like, did no one get asmr from that scene in Harry Potter?
