There's this belief that small local ma and pa shops are better to support because they aren't greedy fucks who tryna bleed you dry of money. That they actually care about the local economy and the money will stay in the community which I find hilarious.

I dunno how or why people think like this because anytime I go to a local shop they always charge their shit out the ass like literally almost 2x more than Walmart. Yeah they might be more personal to you in terms of service but don't think for a second that they actually give a shit about you. You are not their family and if you give them enough money then I'm sure they happily go buy a yacht just like the rich cooperate executives that you hate.

How's your experience with small and local businesses?

It's 50/50. I either love the place or it's run purely on nepotism and sells product for way over retail to stay afloat, inevitably going under (and deservedly so).

Depends on the service, i had way better experience with local exterminators than the big corporate ones, same with plumbers. Rates tend to be cheaper too

Small businesses don't have economy of scale on their side. Something that will cost a big corporation like $1 to sell to you can cost them $3.

They're more expensive than Walmart because Walmart has a much better supply chain, so they can get things at a much lower cost.

Lmao idk bruh but I mean I went in looking for a used Gameboy Color and the guy had the Boy priced at 30 and Tetris for 10

he ended up telling me it was 30 for both - I mean we just talked video games and the great thing was this dude was just more than happy to talk to me for minutes about games and geek out with me over the little things I know

by the end of it I gave him his 40, I dont think Id ever do that at a GameStop because theyre an entire thing while that dude made his whole life revolve around being around video games

I can appreciate and respect the prices coming from someone who really values them I guess (not to say you dont)

Yeah people fall in love with the idea of small businesses like it's the American dream. It's kind of weird and arbitrary.

Consumers gotta do what is best for them. I guess if you see more value in overspending on a small business then that is your choice.

I tend to prefer small or local chains for things like restaurants. Local pizza is always better than chain pizza. Same with chinese places. My local wing place is a million times better than B dubs.

Other than that, I don't really care for a lot of small businesses. Especially local liquor stores that charge way more and with way less selection than large retailers like Total Wine.

This isn't exclusively about prices. The belief that small business owners are "our people" and just like you and me baffles me. I've seen and met enough small business owners to know most of them are greedy as fuck. I'm glad if anyone hasn't, though.

My topics will be enough to get you to post in it maybe two or three times. Hopefully that's substantial to your standard.

The point is that local businesses keep money in the community. When you spend at Walmart, it goes to the stockholders, when you spend and Bill's Groceries, Bill is likely to spend some of that money on other local businesses.

I've heard this claim before and if it was mostly true I'd be more for small and local businesses but I personally don't see it. Great if you did and great for those communities.

I would think that the vast majority would agree with you on local video game stores being way better than Gamestop.

There's definitely examples of local places being by far the better option.

It's true. There's research to back it up. Places like Dollar Family actually kill communities. I'm at work now, I'll try to find stuff later.

I don't mind spending more at a local business, but my fiancee has had trouble at two different jobs with not getting paid overtime. I guess they think they can get away with it because they're small

I have no love for small businesses that are started by people already well off as something to do in their old age
