because those are the active commerce hours for most businesses, its often a 5 day a week schedule, and it forces you to pack the weekend with more shopping trips when you should be recovering from the work week?

The NEET logic is that you're slaving for a corporation for little pay while executives are the ones mostly profiting. Or something like that, I dunno. I live a pretty privileged life working my 9-5 even if the executives makes 100x more than me.

Another negative point is a lot of important places like the bank or DMV or doctor's office are open during those same hours so you need to take time off work to get shit done

Because 40 hours a week is stifling, it sucks that you have to sink so much of your life and time into a full time job. I can't imagine how people do double or more than that a week.

Your body and mental do not get full rest for one day off.

Not full recovery.

That why 996 suck because of that many people suicides.

Look at Japan, Korea , china, and many Asian countries tell me the working condition and hour really good, it not.

It like you live only for work not work only for live.

I'm a teacher. I work 8-4 (with only a 20 minute lunch). I'm so tired by the end of the day, I'm in a terrible mood and need a nap almost every day.

Wake up around 6pm. Then, everything is closed, pretty much. Just a few short hours until I have to go to bed to get right back up at 6:30 in the morning.

It's dark when I wake up, dark when I get home. It's not fun. Especially during COVID.

I feel like having a little shorter shifts with higher pay would be better mentally and allow you to have a life outside of work (granted, not particularly possible these days anyway). I work 2-10 five days out of the week and I just feel like I don't have any time to do anything.

It's also why becoming a manager doesn't sound appealing to me because they're expected to work basically the entire day due to them being on a fixed salary. I'd hate it.

Unless you absolutely love your job and get complete fulfillment out of it, youre essentially in an 8 hour coma doing mindless labor you dont care about for people you dont care about at a company you dont care about.

Naturally, the alternative here is to just do something you love, but thats not always easy to find and/or accomplish in the working world.

What I don't understand is why so many people in the west (America and Britain anyway) gleefully suck off corporations and insist on perpetuating work hours and mentalities that exist to fuck you over and stick to tradition, over any actual benefit to both the workplace AND the employees.

I work in the dirt, in hot ass attics during the summer where insulation fibers stick to your drenched ass skin among dust and wood shavings, in the cold when its freezing for hours, and sometimes the first thing youre tasked to do at 6 in the morning is to break concrete

Its hard to work many hours in those conditions but when you see the money sometimes yer happy.. I lucked out - I work from 6-2 and then from 2-6 doing side jobs and Im making a killing

I dont think people should be working that many hours imo - but I also wanted more money and wanted a better lifestyle so I did what I could while studying up to be a teacher in college

Just been slacking on that but eh, I got my whole life to do that while learning how to work with my hands to buy property

If you have goals that make your work worth it youll definitely be happier

They do not know how horrible a lot of other countries outside the US have it, working 9 AM to 5 PM is honestly not horrible considering places like China or any company that has suicide nets because a job is so bad people will commit suicide rather then stay there.

I work 8 am to 4 PM for my career 4 days a week and I have plenty of time for hobbies, friends, and family while doing what I enjoy as a job.

Yes I do have it easier now, I did work a 40 hour job once and it was why I worked my ass off to land a 32 hour a week career with better pay, better off time, vacation time, benefits, and many other good things.

Trying to get a different job working 40 hours was difficult since I rarely had time to not only look, apply, and try to get an interview. It also pissed me off having so much time wasted at work however I am glad I experienced that shit so I value my good career now.

I have done a few 40 hour weeks when someone called out, was sick, or they needed help at the job. Doing so always leads to extra vacation time or days off, and sometimes a bonus. Hell the next bonus check is coming out in Jan. 1st 2021 which I may go in to work for since it is party day and there might be 30 mins of work if that.

A great question to ask is: if you could build your ideal society, would it look anything like this one?
Because mine sure wouldn't. There's no good reason we should all be chained to working 40+ hours a week with obscenely overpriced healthcare(if you're lucky enough to have health insurance at all/can afford to utilize it) and minimal to no paid leave(of any kind).

I'm especially hot over this subject because I'm almost done with reading B****** Jobs:The Rise of Pointless Work and What to Do About It by David Graeber.

The 8-hour work day is an archaic and outdated concept, normalized at a time when one income was plenty to support an entire family, and another member of the household was depended upon to run basic errands.

But it's not 1950 anymore and two incomes are needed just to make ends meet.

I hear ya. My family and I are doing well especially given these times of Covid, but for many that just isn't always the case.

It's also funny when older people try to tell me they lived off of $6/hr in their 20's, completely ignoring that the value of the dollar is drastically different now, and that $6 in 1980 probably has about the same buying power as $15 in 2020.
