In Massachusetts, a Somerset Police Officer responding to a shoplifting incident, but decided that the punishment didnt fit the crime, so he bought groceries for the suspects instead.

It was five days before Christmas when Officer Matt Lima responded to Stop & Shop responding to a report of shoplifting. Upon his arrival, Officer Lima learned that two women with two young children had not scanned all of their groceries at the self-checkout kiosk, before exiting the store with numerous items not scanned.

Lima took the two suspects aside and learned they had fallen upon hard times and attempted to take additional groceries so they could provide a Christmas dinner for the two children.

The mother of the children was not working and had some other family issues going on and what she had taken was Christmas dinner for the kids, the officer told WJAR News.

Officer Lima served the two women Notice Not To Trespass forms, and refused to file criminal charges.

The two children with the women reminded me of my kids, so I had to help them out, Officer Lima said.
Officer Lima then then purchased gift cards in the amount of $250 with his own money so the women would be able to purchase groceries for their Christmas dinner at another Stop & Shop location.

I would like to personally commend Officer Lima for his actions, Chief McNeil said. They exemplify what it means to protect and serve the members of our community. When faced with a difficult situation in which a family was trying to provide a meal for their kids, he made the generous decision to not press charges and instead ensured that they would have a Christmas dinner they could enjoy.

This.

Also, random story, this happened once to me when I was homeless and going through a really manic period, and I guess in a haze my brain recognized I needed some food...when I was sitting in the back of the police car I think they recognized something was going on with me mentally because they started messing with me whispering my name under their breath and stuff. They ended up writing me a $500 ticket and telling me to just run next time.

they have to be charged via store policy. it's standard protocol to get banned from that particular store for a set period of time.

safeway will charge shoplifters a ban for of a 6 month's to 1 year ban if caught.
stop n shop probably has a same/different policy for the same issue.

lived with my dad who got a 600$ fine for taking cans that got left unattended within the store boundary (still got punished anyway) with a ban for a year from the store.

it was hard times but inexcusable for 8$ worth of cans.

Some say crime, but grocery stores do business taking into account that there are gonna be theft. Pressing charges is for particularly egregious cases, not to arrest some mothers desperate to make their kids happy and destroy their Christmas.

A police person can do this and would be lawfully in the right, but would anybody actually commend them for arresting a bunch of helpless women?

Well because it's a police officer abusing his powers at his own discretion. Consider the power imbalance between a police officer and someone who was caught committing a crime. Then he makes her even further indebted to him by paying for the groceries. Even with the purest intentions (which I'm not sure the cop has), you put her in a very awkward situation. That's why it's creepy IMO.

Why it's bad is because it's deeply unfair how cops can one day decide to pay for a shoplifters groceries and the next they'll choke someone to death because he allegedly had a counterfeit $20 bill. I don't think this story is heartwarming, I think it's troubling.

That makes no sense.

Because a douchebag killed George Floyd it's now wrong for cops to do anything other than murder people?

Personally, I also dont think this was a good thing.

People committing crime always have a reason thats unfortunate. The cop should have given a warning but paying for the stuff is actively awarding crime. Which is a bad precedent. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

And Im going to be that guy. What race were the women?

Pirating has historically led to higher sales and can be mitigated by making the products accessible to purchase. You're running into the fallacy that one pirated copy == one lost sale. That's not true aside from mainstream movies.

A good deed is one thing, but if it was for dinner then unless they had a super large family the costs seem extreme, even then what sort of food were they eating? Im not sure about in the US but here in the UK a good family sized turkey wouldn't be that much relative speaking and the veg would bear near nothing.

Its a difficult situation as we have people who may steal literally to survive getting treated like dirt and have the book thrown at them and these women took a expensive amount of food.
