Some were interested in my playthrough of this game. Feel free to tag up. I may end up tagging a few in the future.

But my first question is are there any missables in this game? No spoilers please

I don't mean simple collectibles. More-so on the topic of amazing weapons and armor, maybe good items.

Anyway. Just started. Definitely a classic feel and I did NOT except voice acting.

There's asstons of missables.

Edit: for a little bit of a power boost, outside Baron (the literal start of the game) you can find an enemy called helldiver which has a 1/256 chance of dropping something called "Cockatrice" and I highly recommend you get it before proceeding with the game.

Great ass game

Not only are there a lot of missables, but you can potentially give them to people that can't utilize them properly, permanently

You'll want to grind anyway the game is significantly harder than it's PSP/GBA/SNES equivalent. It's essentially a "challenge mode" for people who beat the original.

If you don't mind me asking, what led to the choice of the DS version? I beat the GBA version and enjoyed it, but DS was considerably harder.

FF4 on the DS is "Missables: The JRPG"

Doesn't help you only get 3 playthroughs on your file.

DS version is my favourite version to play because of how difficult it is, and how fresh it feels. I've played and beaten FFIV so many times, that I understand why randomizers have grown in popularity.

Wow, the remake of this classic game is almost 15 years old.

I love the voice acting. It's so ridiculously bad, it's the perfect example of so bad it's good. I still remember it to this day.

It's my favorite version of 4, but only after playing the original/ff 4 advance first to appreciate the changes for better or worse.

The augment system is definitely... something that needs a walkthrough for, but on the plus side you can max stat your final party members if you do it right so that's good.

And hoo boy is it difficult compared to the gba version. But in a good way.

Man you're getting me all nostalgic for it, I might pop it in for a spin just to remember what it was like.

Now hang on there, Pink tail farming and whatever is hell of course, but I actually remember shinys in those pokemon days and they were like a 1 in 25,336 chance or some weird shit like that (besides the obvious red gyarados which is story related) and nothing in ff compares to that ridiculousness.

One thing I thought was a shame back then is that they don't have a bonus for if you own the gba version of 4 and you stick it in the DS game cart while playing the DS version of 4. Like an even more ultimate weapon or summon or whatever.

It's completely pointless now, but just something I used to think about even though I gladly bought FF 4 again. I think it used to hold the record for most re-releases over various platforms out of all the FF games.

But heck I'd play it again

Kain's voice acting is amazing.

There are a lot of missables:

- Getting each map to 100% explore is a bonus (do it)
- Augments, the weaker ones notably given to temp party members, nets yet more powerful augments when they go away. Playing blind is fun but full of FOMO; GauRock's topic on the DS board is a great guide.
- Some maps have nooks or passages one would only know about if they played the SNES or later versions, lmao

You don't need it for anything. You can check the spoiler if you want to see what you're missing.

it is a permanent summon spell Rydia learns which is a 100% guaranteed petrify on any enemy that is not immune

Well, Gaurock's is just about augments tbh. And, in retrospect, geared up with multiple playthroughs in mind. For a single playthrough, the general recommendation is SBAllen's ballin' FAQ, pasted below

When I did my playthough, I opted to somehow give Bardsong to Rydia but I don't remember what I gave to Tellah in exchange. Spoilers because you can probably deduce who your temp party members vs final party members are

!Auto-Potion: Give to Porom.
!Item Lore: Give to Palom.
-Counter: Give to Cecil.
!Curse: Give to Palom.
!Tsunami: Give to Tellah.
-Twincast (x2): Give to Cecil and Rosa.
-Bluff: Give to Rydia.
-Cry: Give to Kain.
-Dualcast: Give to Rosa.
!Bardsong: Give to Tellah.
-Salve: Not earned on first playthrough.
-Hide: Not earned on first playthrough.
!Recall: Give to Yang.
!Last Stand: Give to Yang.
-Fast Talker: Give to Rydia.
-Whirlwind: Give to Edge.
-Draw Attacks: Give to Cecil.
-Reach: Give to Edge.
!Analyze: Give to Fusoya.
-Adrenaline: Not earned on first playthrough.
-Upgrade: Not earned on first playthrough.
-MP+50%: Give to Rydia.
!Inferno: to Fusoya.
-Gil Farmer: to NO ONE.
-Darkness: Give to Kain.
-Focus: Give to Cecil.
-Kick: Give to Cecil.
-Brace: Give to Cecil.
-Level Lust: Give to Cecil.
-HP+50%: Give to Rosa.
-Piercing Magic: Give to Rosa.
-Bless: Give to Edge.
-Omnicasting: Give to Rosa.
-Phoenix: Give to Kain.
-Treasure Hunter: Give to Cecil.
-Eye Gouge: Give to Whomever.
-???'s Love: Give to Cecil.
-Safe Travel: Give to Cecil.

Not really. NHK poll of most popular Final Fantasy games (easily the largest poll of this sort ever conducted) places it at 8th (with VII in second place).
https://www.nhk.or.jp/anime/ff/ranking/index.html

Sales numbers are showing 1.44 million sold in Japan on the Super Famicom. Not that impressive, since FFVII sold 3.27 million in Japan. And of course Dragon Quest was consistently outselling all of them. Either way, FFVII was the FFVII of Japan.

lol back in the day, I actually farmed all 5 Adamant Armors, 2 Onion Swords + Onion Shields and 5 sets of the Onion armor

It, uh, took a long time.

The cool thing is though, playing NG+ with all the Onion gear is kind of challenging.
