So the other day I said to myself "Myself, I really miss good broccoli beef, Imma just gonna make my own!!".

Now i've tried before, but I really have never gotten the sauce down, even though I have tried multiple times in the past.

But now there are all these videos to use!! So i'm like, I got this!! I got garlic paste and ginger paste to make adding them easier, got the soy sauce etc, but I skippped the brown sugar...cause diabetic over here.....and I figured it would still be decent without it.

I was wrong, it just tasted like VERY strong soy sauce when I was done. Sigh.

Also maybe it wasn't just the pizza since I didn't realize like most of chinese food that I like had a freakton of sugar in it. Growl.

Seriously though, it's one of my favorite dishes and I can't seem to find any way to make it that doesn't involve alot of sugar being added.

At least I got seriously good pot stickers down now. Saw a few videos on them and next time I make them, I'm going to use a water/slurry (water + flour) instead of just water for the steaming part. This creates that crunchy yum layer under the pot stickers that the best resteraunts have. I made them without it last time and they came out great, but that is the last step...to making the most delicious pot stickers ever...at home.

At least THAT does't have me adding sugar.

REally sad about broccoli beef though, that was like one of my primary ways of eating veggies!!

Yeah, you definitely need some sugar for that dish, unfortunately.

If anyone else wants to try their hand at making this dish, here's the recipe my mom would use a lot when I was little (and now it's one of the few dishes I can reliably cook well):

Edit: Oh, and I recommend severely reducing the amount of oil use and using spinach, broccoli (of course), snow/snap peas, and baby corn for the vegetables.

Thanks for the recipe, I don't have oyster sauce as the one I used didn't include it, but I may try again using that, and then just use 1/2 as much sugar than is listed (hopefully it won't be too bad like that). Your recipe still uses 2 teaspoons of sugar but at least it doesn't have brown sugar as well (prob due to the oyster sauce). I wonder if oyster sauce has sugar in it though.

I may just cut back on the soy sauce, add a bit of hot sauce/marinade and aim for a more spicy broccoli beef instead of the norm (more like a mongolian stir fry sauce, which I have done before many times at mongolian places, without sugar being added).

I'll make it work, but still dissapointed as I really love broccoli beef sauce over rice (love the combo with rice), now I know why...because it has a freakton of sugar in it....sigh.

Yeah, you can definitely halve (at least) the amount of sugar and oil in that recipe. You'll definitely want to use that much oyster sauce, imo.

Basically, because the brain lights up "happy" when it encounters sugar, so it goes into food as often as possible.

Have you tried looking up "sugar-free broccoli beef"?

If not you can search "brown sugar substitute" and see if that suits your needs.
