The sequel to Persona 5 is finally here! I'm amazed how much like Persona 5 this feels. It doesn't have the Confidants and such, but the main story feels like a logical continuation to P5's, with lots of good interaction scenes between the Phantom Thieves. Feels like they got the message and added in all the fun interaction scenes everyone wanted back in the original P5. The dungeons also feel pretty P5-y, with lots of sneaking around and such. The only musou aspect is the battles, which are more self-contained rather than running around the map and such, and even those have a bit of an FF7R feel to them with how you pause to use magic and such. The menus, leveling, and Persona system are all basically lifted from P5, too, and it's still stylish as hell.

This is basically the opposite of Hyrule Warriors in that respect. HW is a musou game that has Zelda characters, while Persona 5 Strikers is a Persona game that has musou combat. Definitely worth checking out for those who love P5!

that pretty much matches my thoughts from the japanese demo last year

I do wonder if that's eventually the future of musou affixing that gameplay to other genres of games

It's an RPG/musou hybrid. It mostly keeps the musou contained to the battles instead of that being the entire point.

Yeah the combat definitely has musou elements to it but this is apparently much more along the lines of "what if Persona was an ARPG."

Played about 90 minutes today. Can confirm that it feels like a pitch perfect continuation of P5 vanilla (or Royal, really). I'm hard pressed to think of a better jrpg sequel/spinoff that feels as authentic and true to the original. It's far superior to P4's fighting/dancing games in that regard (coming from someone who actually liked the P4Arena/Ultimax story modes).

I'm like two hours in now, and it's fun how much the game explains nothing about Persona 5 and just expects you to have played it and remember everything every single detail. I don't mind, it's just that most sequels give you at least some recap.

I only played a tiny bit last night so I'm unable to form an opinion yet. However, there is something with the buttons, at least on the PS4, that is maddening to me and I find it odd that it hasn't been mentioned yet, so I wonder if it's just me. While running around town the confirmation button is circle. That's fine I don't really have any problem with that (though it IS different than NA Persona 5 which took an adjustment). The problem is that when you enter something like a store menu, the confirmation button becomes the X (cross) button and circle becomes the cancel button. My brain can adjust to using circle as the confirmation button, but asking it switch between circle and X within the same game is nuts.

Sometimes you'll go against enemies that make some of your party totally useless, like if the enemy resists physical damage and drains fire Ann would be useless. So I like keeping everyone around the same level.

I'd wager you could call this a legit action JRPG. Dungeons are very similar to how they were in Persona 5, just that instead of going into a turn based battle system, you go into an action battle system.

So far I'm enjoying how well Sophia and Zenkichi are fitting in to the story.

Hot Take - Sophia > Kasumi

I've only played for about 3 hours but I'm having trouble getting used to the combat. Normal difficulty is very easy/simple currently but Hard difficulty absolutely destroyed me. Regular fights feel like they're over too quickly to really get a grasp on what's going on.

I'm not new to musuo style combat but it feels like there's a little too much going on with this battle system. How are you guys managing the rest of your party? Constant switching or just letting them do their own thing?

Never played a Musou but here I typically stay as one character until I get a prompt from another, or switch to hit weaknesses/technicals as needed.

I will say the difficulty curve is pretty weird, at least on Normal. All-Out Attacks are busted as hell for normal fights, especially once you start to outlevel enemies. But the minibosses and especially the actual bosses can end you quickly. The ones near the end of the first palace destroyed me a few times, but by the end of second I was doing a lot better managing them.

The high level shadows that show up are also pretty brutal which makes me think level scaling is pretty important in this game.

Oh yeah, I guess the Trails series kind of has this on lock.

I was mostly thinking in the vein of FFX-2, Xillia 2, XIII-2, the After Years etc. This blows all of them out of the water in terms of maintaining the charm/characterization of the original.

Oh hey I beat it too. Good game! Sophie's stuff near the end was excellent.

Persona 4 Arena is the only other one I've played, and it was alright. Had some fun story parts, but P5S's story was better. Aigis is cool in it.

I think the P3 and P5 dancing games have pretty minimal story, but the P4 dancing game has more of one?

Post-3rd Jail Spoilers

Okay, the Okinawa mini-dungeon was great. The track for the jail sounded like something out of a Falcom game.

I've had some annoying crashes after cutscenes though on PC. Stuck having to constantly save and pray it doesn't go haywire after a long long sequence.
