I don't know if it's more vocal now, but Gen 5 always had a good part of the fanbase claiming it as the best, at least since shortly BW2 came.

BW2 might have been appreciated more since XY came along though because that really underlined how much content those games had.

FR/LG are good imo, the only thing I can think of is how hard it is going back to games before the physical/special split. Most hate they might have gotten I'd assume was just from anti-gen1 people, who have somehow managed to be even more annoying than genwunners themselves.

I haven't been keeping up with the Pokemon fandom since the Sun/Moon days, so some of my intel is outdated, but my general thoughts are:

FR/LG & HG/SS - I haven't seen much hate for them, but as I said it might be a very recent thing.

B/W - These have always been polarizing as hell, with some people saying they're better than HG/SS while others hated them from day 1 due to hating the new Pokemon. B2/W2 in particular have always been highly adored by a large subset of the fandom.

X/Y - Their reception started as highly positive but then soured to being mostly hated. While I think the Pokemon Cycle is generally a bit of a thing, X/Y might not ever rebound because its reasons for crashing like this are a lot more obvious:
- When X/Y first came out, it was exciting to see a main series game in 3D, and with online functionality that wasn't a confusing mess.
- But then OR/AS copied those best features while replacing X/Y's shitty plot, characters, and level curve with good stuff, so X/Y was made obsolete a year later.
- And then the series started going downhill sharply within the last few years, and a lot of people point to X/Y as being the main culprit for introducing the main things that are killing the series (lack of single player postgame content, EXP Share ruining the level curve, etc.)

So I don't know if X/Y ever recovers from that. I think it'd take Gamefreak going in a totally different direction with the series which ruins it even worse, like if they decide to only make 8 bit retro games with no online or something.

Generally speaking I do think there's a Pokemon Cycle though. Not every game goes through it the same way or at all, but there's 4 main phases:

1. Honeymoon phase - The game first comes out and people make their initial opinions on it. These opinions stick around for a few years. The overall opinion of the game can range from overwhelmingly positive (X/Y) to polarizing (B/W) to already hated (R/S).

2. Downswing phase - The haters gain more steam and become louder, while the fans start vanishing one way or another. In the case of Gens 1-2, this was due to the series as a whole going through an unpopular phase.

3. Upswing phase - The haters either move on to other stuff or realize the game wasn't actually that bad. While the fans come back and start singing the game's praises again.

4. Nostalgia phase - Once the game starts getting old, opinions finally start stabilizing, with some people saying the game's a timeless classic while others say it's overrated due to nostalgia.

I'm less a fan of b2w2 but for I guess a weird reason - after BW changed up the story by having N and Ghetsis be final bosses instead of the champion and really folding the story in nicely, BW2 kind of reverted to type and had the story wrapped up before the champion as always. I wanted them to use the sequel to push the formula even more but they reverted.

I still like it a lot though

I fell hard out of love with pokemon at BW. I just couldn't find myself drawn into the game at all.

I stayed away until Sun/moon. I had the console for it, and figured I would give it a go. It was a good game but no where near the highs I had in previous games.

It was at this point I went back to try BW again and found it had a marvelous appeal. Something just clicked and it became one of my favourites. That being said I still think Platinum is my favourite game, and am hoping the gen 4 remakes dont drop the ball too hard.

Part of what's working against X/Y, is it never got an updated version to "fix" the region, characters, and story. Like a lot of people are down on Diamond/Pearl, but they don't mention it much because Platinum came along and fixed a lot of problems. If Pt never happened, you'd have a lot more people expressing hate for D/P. The same is going to be true for Sword/Shield. As much as people generally praise the DLC, it does nothing to fix the main game.

D/P was actually really huge on B8, for myself it was like a major return to the series after not caring so much of RSE (and being much younger time passed much slower!)

and over here we were all excited to be able to play and trade together with the new online features and even hosted our own Board 8 Gym Challenge - with different B8ers being assigned a different element as Gym Leaders

I'm not quite sold on the graphics. The chibi style is okay, but I feel like there's something about the lighting...or maybe shaders that make it look a bit cheap, especially considering how gorgeous Switch games can look.

Pokedabbler here, only main gen I didn't play when it was current was Hoenn (gasp!)

Here's my hot takes.

D/P/Pt: great minigames within (I loved the underground, oddly) but went a bit overboard on the amount of legendaries. Welcomed the special/physical split immensely even if everything and their mother ran Hypnosis.

B/W: loved the unrepresented dual typings being expanded upon, legitimately liked some newer Pokes (I like the Trubbish/Klink/Vanillite lines,) and the music and story were both great. The season changes, ehhhhn... Also, I dislike the new legendaries, and also dislike this starter line the most out of any gen overall... until:

X/Y: I hated it before it was unpopular. The story was dumb, the starters suck visually except for Greninja, the music was bad, and the fairy imbalance sucked. Also, boo boo keys.

So I stopped playing Pokemon games during diamond/pearl. So looking at this from the outside, I don't remember XY being well received. Like the only time I considered going back to the series was around BW2. It's been basically downhill for the reception of each new game since.

BW had the best story which is why it is regarded as one of the best games within the series, but for those that don't care about the story in Pokemon I can see why someone may dislike it, mostly for the same reasons why people hated Ruby/Sapphire (it tried to soft reboot the series.

X/Y holds a special place for me because it was the only time I caught all the Pokemon and spent a lot of time breeding (along with getting a bunch of random shiny Pokemon). I also created a theoretical gotta catch 'em all speedrun route.

Diamond was my last game until Moon, looking back I don't really like the region very much and the Pokemon aren't very good, but the online stuff was really a huge huge deal. It's of course taken for granted now but being able to trade/battle others across the world was wild. And I think they used the dual screens very well (especially with it being the first gen to have them), the presentation was all very nice.

All DP's strong points are imo QoL stuff that became standard with what followed, so I really have zero desire to play a remake in any form. I will check out the music though, that was great in DP and I hope they do some good remixes.

I don't know how TMs are going to be handled in the remake, but ORAS (the closest comparison here) turned TMs into infinite use after the original games (RSE) had only single-use TMs.

What will be more interesting is whether we get TRs in the remake, or if it will be TMs only.
