Raccoon. Sadly we don't have them in England but I'm very much obsessed with the little critters.

My friend has a pet raccoon. His name is George Cooney. It's cute, it hangs out on the couch watching movies and eating snacks like a fat kid. But it's also a huge pain in the ass, it smells, it's messy, and if anyone comes over and gets bit the little guy has to get put down.

Well, I think by this point everyone knows my answer to this question:

I had always thought it would be cool to have a squirrel as a pet. Weirdly, my first girlfriend ended up having a pet squirrel that she had taken from under a tree when it was an infant. Two weeks into us dating she got sent to a "therapeutic boarding school" in another state and I got stuck with the squirrel. Squirrels don't make good pets. Classic case of corrupt a wish irl.

I haven't wanted a non-typical pet since. One day I'd like to have some goats and practice beekeeping, but those are normal things.

Edit: also, pro-tip, squirrel bites fucking HURT. Avoid if they seem agitated.

A dragon.

A giant pacific octopus would be really cool, but their lifespan is fucking terrible. A colossal squid would be neat, but the size of tank you'd need would be ginormous because they don't work so well in captivity. Otherwise a wolf, tiger, or bear would be cool... but there would likely be some issues there.

So realistically speaking, maybe between a raccoon, one of the more domesticated felid hybrids (like a Savannah cat), a raven/crow, an owl, or a large monitor lizard of some sort. There are also some oversized dog breeds I'd like to own, where I'm in the wrong climate for them and they're prone to health problems.

Then you definitely want a tortoise, considering they'll very likely outlive you >_>

Even parrots can last 80 years, though, which might still be more years than you have left. Basically you'd get your lifetime's value from a pet like that, because it ain't going nowhere.

They look great but I don't want something that big round me. He'd need a lot of space to move around and a lot of shade too since those things can't be in the Sun too long. They bask to get warm then have to go in the shade. You'd need a big yard with trees and stuff. The good thing is they don't need much food or water even for their huge size.

No sir. Those things are very dangerous on a large scale. They're also disgusting and smell horrible. We have a lot of those here (Caribbean). Its an invasive species that came 10+ years ago causing widespread vegetation and crop destruction. There was a huge Government campaigns across the entire region to wipe them out over a period of years. But it was so tough because they replicate like crazy. The numbers are much less now than like 5 years ago. That's part due to human eradication and part to them finding natural enemies after some time. Apparently things like centipedes realised what a food bounty they were. Funnily enough part of the campaign was promoting them as food, yeah not very effective.

The lionfish campaign was though in that regard. That was the worst eco invader along with the giant snail, but their numbers got decimated by people since it seems they are rather tasty. You just have to handle the poisonous bits properly. I would say that would make another good pet (lionfish) since they look extremely cool, but that's what exacerbated the problem of them ending up where they don't belong.
