Background:
I live in San Francisco, a super liberal city w/ a high population of Asian-Americans (I'm engaged to one actually) and today my social media feeds all revolve around "ending asian-hate" and attempting to discredit the shooter's motives that he shot of the massage parlors because he wanted to eliminate the temptation due to hus sex addiction issues.

Some of the people on my feed are going through great lengths to psychoanalyze and connect the dots to make sure that everyone knows that this was a white supremacist motivated shooting. Including trying to justify that "sex addiction" is a white person problem, and there for violence due to sex addiction equates to violence due to white supremacist values.

It just doesn't make any sense to me. Like what's the point? Why try to shoehorn motives onto an obviously disturbed and evil man. The only justification seems to be so that the tragedy can be leveraged to push certain political agendas and what have you.

I feel as if a lot of the evil fucking tragedies that are committed in the world, particularly in America, are never properly addressed or attempted to be quelled because society tends to use "whataboutism" to use these incidents as vehicles to unite societies efforts to combat unrelated problems.

The Salon Shooting:
For this particular incident, this shoot has a history of mental illness when it comes to his sex addiction. He check himself into a mental hospital last year to try and seek help. A lot of the mental issues he faced that led to this shooting (if his own testimony is to be taken at face value) was because he couldn't receive the proper help he needed. I would beg to hypothesized, that the negative stigmas associated w/ sex addiction, especially if he comes from a religious family may have driven him over the edge.

Dude is going to be institutionalized/imprisoned for the rest of his life as he should be. But, I feel as if society will take this tragedy and use it to further the divide between left/right, and continue talking about "race politics" when they should be looking into improving the mental health resources available to impoverished americans who probably can't afford it.

It somewhat appears to me as if a great deal of people simple WANT him to be racist. They DESIRE that the motivation for this tragedy be tied to Race Politics, so that they have something "relatable" to yell at - so they have something they can share personal experience of, and campaign/rally against.

Conclusion:
I understand the feeling of wanting to get personally involved, but ignoring the actual issue at hand just so that somebody can make the tragedy "about themselves" really just rubs me the wrong way.

I really think that the true root of these problems should be identified, tackled, and solved...no matter how "off the wall" or unrelatable they may be. All the tragedies in the world isn't rooted in some form of solidarity amongst evil souls - its a nuanced issue. That nuance should be respected, if it isn't, then nothing can ever be fix'ed. Society will continue to devolve.

Asian salons have a stigmas of being associated with prostitution, where as regular beauty parlor's do not. Especially ones located in the "red light districts" of various urban areas.

I actually reside in the Red Light District of SF, and we have lots of Asian Parlors that are open in the afterhours that operate legally as legitimate salons, but they are typically marketed in bright lights and w/ sexual innuendo. Most people associated them w/ prostitution - whether or not they actually are.

This shooter targeted only the salon's in the Red Light Districts which were open in later hours. They may have been legitimate salons, but given the man's history of sex addition, it's pretty safe to say he associated them with prostitution.

A big segment of Asian American Pornography actually roleplays on this sleazy "male fantasy" - a male actor goes to get a massage at an Asian Salon, the Female actress role plays that for some extra cash he can get a "happy ending"and whala, just like that you have yourself a situation that escalates into a 15-30 minute porn video.

This is a very very common role playing scenario for American Pornography. If anybody uses the various "porno tubes" (and I know that CE does) if you type in "Asian" within the search bar you'll get hundreds of these videos. If the dude was associating these parlors w/ his sex addiction. Its most likely he was relating to them the situations he probably watched play out on a daily basis within the thousand of hours of porn watching he inflicted upon himself.

Maybe there should be a discussion on how Asian adult film actresses are depicted within the industry and openly put into videos that support negative stereotypes, and encourages dangerous race fetishing. Non asian adult film actresses are not subjected to the same situations, and as such do no suffer from such problems.

If its racism, the yes I agree. The reason for the racism does still matter, though, as its important to understand how this person developed their prejudice, that way there is a problem that can be tackled and fixed to prevent future similar tragedies.

But shooting up a mall and killed 3 white people 5 asians, 5 blacks, and 7 hispanics doesn't make it a racially motivated killing just because he happened to kill more POC then white people. Thats what I'm getting at. Is shoehorning racism in as a motivation, when it might not be.

What if the guy shot up the mall because he lost his job, and was unable to receive any financial assistance from the government to help him get back on his feet, So he ended up homeless. He went to the mall just to inflict his pain and suffering onto others. If we start shoehorning race as a motivation into the equation, then the actual issues that led to this guy shooting up the mall go untouched...

This gets done alot, and is always in poor taste. It just just purposely leads to political discussions and ignore that actual issues that caused the tragedy. Thus, it's never fixed, and the same tragedy is bound to happen again.

EDIT: In this particular case the guy does look like he is indeed a racist. But my point still stands. Also, I'm banning you from the Official Discussion Topic thsi Saturday if you bring this up while we are watching ;-)

So by shoehorning "racism" in as a motivation for every single act of evil ever committed, the real issues that caused the tragedy to happen in the first place goes undiscussed. As such no changes are ever made, and problems are bound to repeat itself.
