Holy shit, some of these responses. Like I get it, when she was coffeebeanz she would go to a topic that was complaining about the GOP with the typical "but what about democrats" which got very annoying and would sometimes try to change the topic so she can can do the "both sides" thing, but people's opinion can change and honestly I saw it flat out in real life.

I have 3 uncles who are doctors and are loaded, so yes all three of them are... or for better wording "were" Republicans. They are first loved Trump for his "macho" and "sticking it to the libs and dems" attitude. The biggest turning point for them was when Covid 19 happened and not only did they saw Trump's attitude being a piece of shit about it, but his terrible response and misinformation that followed it especially from Trump's supporters. The first time in their life they were being called fake actors and get death threats about it; people who are clearly not from the medical field to somehow claim to be experts on how viruses works, to being called a Chinese spy because they're asian (Vietnamese). For most people who turn away from the GOP, it's always because they get personally affected by its own ideological bigotry. So you either stay as a Republican admitting your party is ran on selfishness and paranoia or you get out because of it.

So anyways, I'm 3/4 Vietnamese and 1/4 French. One thing that has been taught in our household when it comes to solving problems is to shrug it off and either ignore or solve it without complaining about it. Always say you don't want any trouble because any actions you do not only affects you, but it represents your friends and love ones as well... and I'm very sure that I'm not the only asian to be raised up with this kind of mentality. You see this a lot especially in East Asian countries like Japan and South Korea. It also plays into the "model minority" bs and why asian voices tend to not be heard as loud as other minorities like Blacks or Hispanics. It's a culture problem that I see slowly eroding away for many second generation Viets like myself.

Isn't one of the reasons Asians are a favorite minority for racists because they generally react to racism like your brother? "No big deal." Unlike black and hispanic people who have the "audacity" to get upset and complain about it.

Me, and my family have been dealing with it since we were born, or came to America. We just took it, and moved on. Me and my cousins attended schools that were made up of mostly black kids, while we made some great friends there, there were long stretches it was just hell. If we could get a penny for every, "Ching chong", "Bruce Lee waa-taah" or whatever we've gotten, we probably would have some tidy sum. And that's not even including the harsh bullying some of us got.

For those that don't know, I'm half-Chinese. My brother looks considerably more Chinese than I do; I pretty much got everything from my dad, aside from brown (instead of blonde) hair. Pretty much nobody would even guess I'm half-Asian based on my looks.

But my brother has dealt with discrimination his whole life, and it's really starting to get to me because he always passes it off as "no big deal."

Except it is. It's a huge deal. It's NOT cool that people say shit like "I bet you play piano all the time" or "go back to where you came from." Particularly because I'm literally the same amount of Chinese as he is, yet they let me off the hook solely because of looks. He doesn't deserve it - we are born and raised here in the United States. We're Americans. The fact that I had to comfort my mother every time Trump and his supporters called COVID19 the "Chinese Virus," which resulted in passive-aggressive treatment from the conservatives in her neighborhood, is just distressing.

I'm in a very unique situation as someone who would be called a "white person" by a passerby, but I live in a Chinese family and I know our customs and lifestyle. I know how we're judged, and how we're portrayed by the media. Yet I also know what it's like to not be on the receiving end of those judgments. And it's wrong. It's ****ing ridiculous, Republicans. Grow the fuck up.

your peor made me think you look like Kristin Kreuk

I am sorry youre going through this, and that your family is going through this. Hopefully the country can grow from this and come out more tolerant :(

In a somewhat similar situation. My brother and i have the same parents, though I look white and he looks Native American. He's been discriminated against, had to do things like cut his hair to get a job even though it's a part of our culture. I don't even grow mine out, cause I don't look Native (Natives are sometimes able to look at my facial structure and say "You're Native arent you" but otherwise no one guesses)

He is also more conservative than me and also does not care.

As someone who has given you a lot of shit over the years, the growth youve shown particularly in the last year has been really nice to witness. We still vehemently disagree on a lot of issues, but its great to see that your knee jerk reaction isnt to deflect away from conservative bullshit and give the most worthless hot takes imaginable. I hope you keep looking for facts and solutions to political problems through an empathetic lens because youve always seemed capable of doing that when discussing your job.

It sucks that youve had to experience and watch your family experience such shittiness and racism. Im glad there is a national conversation going on right now about anti-Asian racism. There are a lot of Asian stereotypes and assumptions that I didnt even really think of as issues until well into my adult life, and I hate thinking about how I had perpetuated that shit personally. Im glad were all able to grow, and I hope the country as a whole can do the same.

I don't really have any excuses for why I said the things I said or believed the things I believed. The most important thing I've learned through this whole ordeal is the importance and value of being willing to accept you're wrong and to change your mind. People don't have to be defined by a set ideology, and those who feel so obligated to defend things that aren't right are only hurting themselves.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I learned that seeking the object of truth is far more important than "being right" and that being wrong and learning from it is infinitely more valuable than being wrong and stubborn about it.

Helping Doom art, a person I used to disagree with strongly on political grounds, through his tough time with lymphoma was really the start. It was the crack in the firmament, reminding me that we are all humans first, Americans second, and political parties last. That is just one of many things that I can no longer sit back idly and allow Republicans to dictate.

And I realize these are not DarkRoast's words and you're attempting to speak for her (which is its own issue), but demanding gratitude for base-level empathy is arrogant.

@CyricZ

No one is demanding gratitude. Just pointing out how that'd be an ideal reaction. Well, an ideal reaction would just be people not turning this entire topic to a discussion of her past political views. I say just let go of whatever she'd say in the past, because it's obvious her stances on a number of things have changed a lot.

We don't live in an ideal world.

We live in a world where people will say "I'm good now you can trust me I'm on your side", and then will in the future demonstrate in some way how they're not.

There are clearly people in this topic still mindful of what TC has said and done in the past and aren't entirely ready to forgive and forget. That's human, and you can't make them do otherwise.

These things take time. TC has shown they understand this and are trying.

"You should be thankful" is the language of demanding gratitude, and the language of abusers.

If that's not the words you were trying to say, then use different words. Have a care.

Yeah I guess I have to ask you

What good do you see from bringing up her past opinions?

Keep in mind, TC was never really a Trump supporter. She'd always say "I'm not a Trump supporter, but..." Then bring up some sort of deflection towards Democrats. More of an anti Democrat than pro Trump type.

So sort of a tacit Trump supporter at worst and an an anti Democrat at best. This is far from an unforgivable stance for me. They are just opinions even as harmful as I and you may still feel they are.

So what is your goal with bringing up her past opinions? Who does this benefit?
