They were all over when I was a kid. I remember my brother and I would always check the coin returns to see if there were any quarters for the arcade :-)

There was a diner I used to go to with my dad on saturdays, and they had a cig vending machine at the front door. I think they got rid of it in the early 90's

Thats probably right around the time they started going away

they were in most bars and bowling alleys but youd also see them sometimes just in grocery stores or restaurants

I've only seen repurposed versions of these that sell condoms and candy and such. Usually in or near a bathroom.

Yep I went into the waiting area of a bar/restaurant and bought them when I was a teen.

I don't smoke anymore but that's what I used to do

Yes I remember those. My grandpa would stop to grab a pack, this was also the time when there were smoking and non smoking sections in restaurants.
