I've never played a literal second of either game; but now that I've beaten Sunshine, it's time to play the Most Critically Acclaimed Video Game(s) of All Time.

Should I be hyped y/n

Yes.

I have very fond memories of 1. I remember searching for a Wii for like two months and finally getting it, along with Galaxy 1. It was well worth the time and effort I had to put in to find it.

The Galaxy games are very well-made and creative. Just don't ask me to get 100%.

I assume this is set up the same way as 64 and Sunshine, where you need a minimum amount of stars to get to the end--but anything more is a pure achievement goal?

100% in Mario Galaxy 2 is one of the best rewards the series offers

Pretty much; like the other two there are also milestone numbers that you have to hit before you unlock the next batch of levels. IIRC Galaxy 2 has the most frequent number of those checkpoints of the four.

SMG1 is great but fairly diluted in terms of level design. There's lots of copy paste. Skip the extra challenge that you unlock at the end.

Both games have a tangible reward for getting all stars, but they do involve a lot of repetition so it's up to you if you want to go for them.

100% in the galaxy games really isn't bad. it's not like 64 where you have to really work to figure out what the heck you're supposed to be doing

---
You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

I don't think sunshine actually did that

at least to beat the game, I'm pretty sure it requires you to finish the shadow Mario chase on every stage, but doesn't care about total number of shines at all

Right, but since you have to do the Shines in a set order, you end up having to collect a set number of Shines to unlock the final level anyway since I'm pretty sure you can't sequence break on Shadow Mario.

But the number of Shines doesn't matter at all for beating the game. You need 43 Shines to unlock the last level (unless more sequence breaks are found), but that doesn't mean any set of 43 Shines is enough. It's not like 64 or the Galaxy games where very few stars are actually required to beat the game.

Well, it matters in the sense that you need them to unlock the Shadow Mario levels. I get that it's not a specific number like in Mario 64 or Galaxy for unlocking the final level, but you need them to unlock the levels that unlock the final level.

Yeah I know what you mean, and this was actually my least favorite thing about Sunshine. Being able to get the amount of stars I needed in 64 in whatever order I wanted was very liberating and prevented a lot of burnout on the tougher levels. Sunshine forced me to replay things over and over without advancing, which was enraging.

Glad to hear that Galaxy seems more open ended.

I love the galaxy games a lot, but I have to admit, they don't hold my attention as much as my favorite video games. I have never finished 1, and probably only finished 2 once, but have started replaying it several times since then. Definitely didn't have the energy to 100% either one.

Odyssey on the other hand, I 100%ed twice in a row in the first several months, and then beat it again a year later.

I think the problem with Galaxy 1 and 2 is the hub world and world map--every time I get sent back there after a level, there's such a temptation to take a break, and shut down the console. And then I never feel like spending the effort starting it up again.

But Odyssey extremely rarely sends you to a hub/map, and the switch has all the sleep/resume stuff.
