Sad thing is a main character actually permanently dying is a plot twist because most creators are afraid to do it.

"One of your party members has died" was semi-normal for Final Fantasy tbh.

My top 3:
Braid.
"Would you kindly"
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - All of the fire and magic you've been seeing is a bunch of fancy parlor tricks, and everyone else opted to take mind-altering drugs to forget about their previous lives and opt to live in this fantasy land going forward.

Or maybe something from the Nonary Trilogy, because that's several layers of mind-bending WTF-ness.

I think the twist in Resident Evil Revelaitons was actually done really, really well.

You spend maybe half the story swapping back and forth between Chris and Jill, trying to find each other on this spooky abandoned cruise ship.
Then midway through the game, you find out you're actually on two entirely different ships with similar layouts.

that's actually kind of cool.

These have been said by others already but:
Bioshock
KOTOR was my first big memorable one
Braid - Someone else said this and I agree. Unexpected plot twist.

At that point, it's a staple to the Layton series, tbh. Layton 1 was where all the townspeople are robots protecting a girl whose father killed himself and it's all just gotten zanier since. Which is a strange contrast to the general comfy tone of the game and puzzles, but also part of its charm.

Yea, I loved the twist of Diabolical Box the most. The Unwound Future twist explaining the 'future' was a bit too much though imo, even though I really like the ending of that one overall.

Ever 17 (which I highly, highly recommend you play before reading this, I can't do the twist justice) appears as if it has 2 protagonists, Kid and Takeshi, whose stories you follow as if they happen simultaneously; they both take place in the same place, and they appear to have most of the same characters. In reality, Takeshi's side takes place in 2017 and Kid's side takes place in 2034. This is in an effort to trick a 4th-dimensional entity (the player) into believing they're both happening simultaneously so that they can save Takeshi (who dies at the end of all of his routes) and Coco. On Kid's side, you believe you're playing as the Kid character you see on Takeshi's side, but you're actually playing as a character named Hokuto. The reveal is masterfully done where he thinks he's losing his shit from all the crazy things that are happening, he looks in a mirror, and both you and him have your jaws in the floor as you see a completely different face from what you've assumed from the very beginning of the game.

It's not even the first FF to kill off a party member, I don't see how anyone could think it's the biggest twist unless it's literally the first RPG you ever played.

Actually, that's probably why people would think so lmao

FF6 spoilers World of Ruin is probably one of the biggest twists in the series

Baten Kaitos:
About halfway into the game, you discover that someone in your party is giving information to the empire. Pretty old JRPG trope, so at first it seems like its nothing major. The game gives you pretty good reason to suspect a couple of the party members, but nothing too concrete. Then you finally confront one of the members of the empire (who up to this point, was actually an ally); and then it's finally revealed who the traitor is. It's you. The main character is the traitor.

Every other game that has tried that trope has been a major letdown since then.

I bought Baten Kaitos when it first came out and like an idiot, went to the board where some asshole spoiled it in a topic title. I think that was when I learned not to visit boards while playing certain games.

Another GCN game I thought had a good twist was Tales of Symphonia.

(Spoilers) When Kratos betrays the team in the final Sylvarant tower and revealed himself to be an angel blew my mind. Then once again much later in the game it was revealed that he was part of the original journey 4000 years ago. Then to finally top it off, he's actually Lloyd's father.
