KOTOR is still the big one for me.

This and Bioshock's "Would you kindly" are still my favorites. Not only because they are so well done, but they are twists that would only have that much impact in a video game. If they were done in movies that wouldn't be that special.

Amagami secret route
After getting one of the best two endings for each of the 6 girls, you find out that there's a 7th girl... And that she was going around the entire time speaking with the girls, trying to get them to dump you or otherwise avoid you. And the reason why she's done this is because she's a stalker who has been madly in love with the main character for years.

Another ridiculous reveal is in Remember 11 where, after 7 days of Kokoro being stuck on a blizzard-fraught mountain (again, I highly recommend you play before clicking the spoiler), she walks outside to find a goddamn ocean at her feet.

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - All of the fire and magic you've been seeing is a bunch of fancy parlor tricks, and everyone else opted to take mind-altering drugs to forget about their previous lives and opt to live in this fantasy land going forward.

Or maybe something from the Nonary Trilogy, because that's several layers of mind-bending WTF-ness.

Another big one from ace attorney is your client that you've been defending being the real mastermind all along overturning the whole concept of the series up to then.

you ever get the urge again, it's being remastered by the guy who made it. Controls the same, just using uncompressed assets this time, and adding a commentary mode.

Havent played it either.

8 month ago it said that the remaster is coming Q1 2021.

Honestly if it was a standalone game it wouldn't have been such a terrible twist, but the long term implications for the series makes it fucking stupid.

Christ that's bad. Quite similar to Assassin's Creed for me. Once I found out you were just some dude putting on virtual reality gear to play as the assassins, my interest in the series fell apart.

The best part is the twist comes only halfway through the game. The second half of the game is about you and your party going to the "real world" and fighting the company who made the game, culminating in the main software engineer guy being the final boss.

It's chronologically at the end of the series.

There's some plot points in older games it actually gives context for, but then you had stuff with certain super advanced civilisations in 2 and 4 that make it clear they kind of... Stopped considering the implications on the entire series by adding in further details like that.

Nothing beats the fact that Osterzone is Dunning Smith. Or that the origami killer is Scott Shelby.

And Phantasy Star 2 did that scene before Final Fantasy 7 and did it better. Now that I think of it, the end of that game is the greatest plot twist.

Chronologically the series goes 4,1,2,5,3. Expanding on what gunplagirl said, its chronologically the last game since the company succeeds in wiping out the corrupted Milky Way, but the character data cant be deleted so everyone in the galaxy just continues to perceive their lives. Basically nothing changes for anyone alive in that year even though the server doesnt exist anymore.

That's similar to DQ 7:

The world has been broken apart and sealed away into different pieces by the Demon Lord. The hero and his party attempt to put it back together and resurrect the Almighty.

It turns out The Almighty is the one who broke it apart, and your party unleashes The Demon Lord back into the world.

If topic title is meant as most well known twist that even non-gamers know, then yeah probably. No game comes close. Hell before I knew what the hell a final fantasy was that twist was known (luckily I still ended up being surprised oddly enough due to how and when it was presented in the game)

Never understood the hate for star ocean 3's twist. The only problem I had with it is they don't really do anything with the twist that's of note, it's just an "okay" shoulder shrug moment and the game goes on. But otherwise, saying it ruined a 'series' when there was literally just one game before it, so 2, which was only barely a sequel to so 1 which I don't think even came to NA at the time... is ridiculous

I believe the twist was that you used to be an evil sith lord and erased your own memories prior to the start of the game.

Better- the jedi captured you when your apprentice inevitably betrayed you, they wiped your memories, and brainwashed you into becoming their weapon against the sith. All the jedi masters who you met on Dantooine, they knew exactly who you were the entire time.

And Bastila- the jedi who had been with you for the entire journey, didn't just know about it. She was the one who captured you and made it happen.

I wanted to save her so much. You dont know how many times i played to that part in the game. There were rumors how. I tried what i could. Everything after that part was numbing for me because her part in the story was over.

All the memories came back and i felt like cloud in ffvii remake. The heart ache of not being able to save her. The absolute blind hatred i had for sephiroth. How somber i felt at the ending of ffvii.

The only way id feel like ...finally its the ending i imagined would probably be saving both her and sephiroth from their fate. If that can somehow happen, ffvii remake is the best rpg i played in my life. The games story still part of me after over 20 years.

Not a massive twist in any real capacity but the moment in Wild ARMs 3 where you find out Virginia's dad, who you've been chasing for almost the whole game, turned out to be a hologram, her real father was already dead. Also one of the party members, Jet, turns out to be an android. Genuinely caught me off guard at the time.
