I did my usual errands today. Of the four places I visited, only one had workers who were still wearing masks (and it was only some of them, not all). Nearly every sign out front was changed from 'must wear a mask' to 'unvaccinated individuals must wear a mask. Two of the establishments I visited had a sign out front stating their workers were vaccinated.

Looks like Target, CVS, Costco, Walmart, etc are all dropping mask requirements.

I thought for sure the whole unmasking phase was going to go much slower - but in a matter of days they are nearly non-existent in my every-day life.

It's half over, but, people want to get this whole thing done with.

I've got my second shot though, so I'm all good and not really my problem anymore. I've done my civic responsibility, so now I'm free to lick doornobs.

Which is a wonderful mentality to have, when getting lax too early can spike the whole thing worse than any prior point, thus sort of defeating the entire point of the last year and a half anyway.

The only thing worse than shutting everything down and quarantining is shutting everything down and quarantining and having it turn out to have been a complete waste of time.

We're not out of the woods yet, but we're close. Half the country need to get their heads out of their asses though and get vaccinated.

It probably won't really be over for years, since this is likely just a lull. Even if you vaccinate everybody and keep masks for the next two years, we're likely to see resurgences at some point due to mutations, etc, at which point the country will shut down fast.

As far as I understand it things are winding down, but shit may get serious again once people need to get vaccinated again, especially in the winter.

But I think this will have some long term affects. My work doesn't have plans for anyone to return to the office. I know that for me this has had some pretty negative side affects (I haven't gotten the vaccine and have no real reason to go outside anymore. Work was the main reason for me to leave my room for the past 8 yeares).

Masks were removed at my work today - so no more masking. Most people work pretty far apart anyway, so it wasn't a big deal IMO.

They just told everyone at my office it is time to come back - minimum 2 days a week in the office moving forward and all days in the office after July 4th. Two people retired last week - I'm guessing it isn't coincidental.

Yea we've had several people leave the company recently. I guess a few were holding on until the pandemic ended, and we're basically there already. I am going to miss going into the office (I still do). One of the main reasons I enjoyed the office so much was that I frequently walked to lunch. Now I just work like 10-12 hours a day.

I've seen someone who made a "multipass" plastic holder for the vaccine card and I want to get one of those to wear around.

I don't get why they couldn't open things up but keep the mask requirement till we have herd immunity.

Wearing the mask isn't a big deal. The social distancing when in a public area is by far the bigger annoyance.

And operating on the honor system is fucking stupid.

Eeyup. I understand why the CDC made their announcement, but it really was irresponsibly premature, given how the populace was guaranteed to react to it. This will almost certainly result in further outbreaks that didn't have to happen.

I get that people are sick of it and it's really tempting to latch on to any apparent hope of being free of it all, but giving up early is only going to waste everything that has been sacrificed up until this point. We need to see this through, and that has to mean erring on the side of caution.

Do you also make comparisons to Nazis when a cop asks for your license and registration after pulling you over? Or proof of insurance? For that matter, do you think it was unreasonable for the actual gestapo to ask for papers to identify spies during a period when espionage was a very serious threat to public safety?

The problem with the gestapo asking for papers isn't that they asked for papers. It's what they did with the information they found on those papers. Being asked for proof of covid vaccination is not going to hurt you. Being asked for proof that you weren't Jewish in Nazi Germany was. That's a very, very big difference, and dismissing literal genocide as being irrelevant is absolutely worthy of being moderated.

Its becoming more and more plain as day the way vaccine Passports will be implemented is not goi g to be by the government (unless I guess you are a govt employee and that job requires proof of vaccination, thats another issue but somewhat similar to the private sector for what follows).

its obvious the way its headed is as either an alternative to a private businesses mask requirements (ie: wear the mask or not service OR you can elect to show proof of vaccination). Which every private business has a right to do and that dynamic even bypasses the extremely heavy handed laws from states that want to interfere with the freedoms of private businesses to demand what they want of patrons.

the other is that certain private business industries like concerts, baseball games, theater, movie theaters etc. could simply require vaccine passports in order to become a patron or (like the Dodgers have done) set up vaccinated sections with no real space or masking restrictions and unvaccinated sections that require masks and social distancing.

thiw coild even carry into restaurants like smoking and non smoking sections.

amd before anyone spouts discrimination nonsense- thats not the law. Vaccination status is not nor will ever be a protected class especially when every state requires proof of certain vaccines to go to public school.

I would never do that because your vaccine card contains personally identifiable information that people can use to dox you. However, if there was an app on your phone that could be scanned to let someone know you have been vaccinated (similar to how it is done with concert tickets nowadays), then that would be fine.

DoB is considered personal information, and can be used to dox people. It is actually a federal mandate that any system that stores someone's DoB has to encrypt it so that there is a separate layer of protection in case they are hacked. So yea, don't tell random people your DoB.

here in california, everyone is still wearing a mask even outside where there are not much people, except for... "certain people". i cant say because im gonna sound racist but everybody else always wear a mask, except for them. like 99% of them dont wear mask, but everybody else do. not being racist, but thats just exactly what i see. and im not gonna judge or anything because maybe they are already vaccinated, but even before they made the announcement, around 70% of them already dont wear masks outside. but everybody else do. just my observation.

It will never be over...it's called 'COVID-19' because there has been 19 (maybe more) variants of it in the past...but none never reached pandemic levels like 19

So yea, it probably will be a COVID 20, 21, 22...

Thing is Covid will never truly go away because we need booster shots every six months

Eventually the mutation that's in India will make it's way over here and spread like wildfire

I won't be surprised at all to see another wave hit the US hard in the winter season

Where are you getting that information? I've heard whispers of it, but nothing official.

The tricky thing is we do not know who has or hasn't been vaccinated so I still wear a mask when in large gatherings just to be safe.

I just don't really know where that's coming from, all of the previous vaccines need boosters every 20 years or so.
