I'm mostly WFH right now, and not working much besides, so as I was sitting at my desk, I heard this plaintive cry outside. I assumed it was some kind of bird call, especially with how it kept going, but I thought, hmm, I wonder if that's actually a cat. Not my cats; they're both inside. But hey, lemme look.

So I check and there's this tiny kitten absolutely crying for help from underneath the neighbor's gate. And I'm thinking this won't end well when they let the dogs out, so I venture in, walk up, and the kitten just looks at me like I'm the most important person in the world and their total savior, and is trembling in my hands as I pick it up but nuzzles right against my chest. (Which was adorable, but also gross because its back end was wet.)

I brought it inside and tried to separate it from my other cats. And it is just the biggest ball of unconditional love and bottomless pit for affection. After giving it milk and then dry cat food, I made a small set-up for it in the basement. As I closed the door, it cried as much as it had outside for me to come back, and I'm like, dude, I got clients to conference with.

But I brought the kitten back out as soon as I could, and it's just the same as before. My roommate and a friend were both doting on it, and I have no idea what I'm going to do with this thing long-term. So yeah, tomorrow I've got a decision to make with where this little guy's going, but for now he's (I think it's a he) absolutely adorable.

I haven't committed to keeping the kitten, but I have a vet appointment this afternoon. If not with me, I know exactly where they're (probably) going. If I hang onto Tiny, I'll need a name and my other two are going to have to figure out how to contend with a new face. They were not happy yesterday.

Kitten spent the night in the basement after being all loves and snuggles, which made me feel bad leaving him down there. That and the pitiful cry. Probably away from the mom a bit too early, but I never saw any sign of her or any littermates. Bottomless pit, which I hope is just a sign of malnourishment and not that he's eating for two, but vet will address that. Is currently using the litter box, though, so nice to know probably no litter training will be required.

The kitten is absolutely precious, but I got nothing done today. He will not be left alone and cries for attention. It's constant and obscenely loud. Either you are playing with him or he falls asleep on your lap and pins you to the chair. It's sweet since my two cats aren't lap cats, but I do need to be able to move around, or, y'know, leave the house without worrying about a domestic incident.

My older cat, Neko, is the biggest omega and he just wants to run and hide from the kitten. I found him terrified under my bed covers after a thorough search. My 2yo, Ashes, is much feistier and she wants nothing to do with the kitten. I let her out and she usually disappears for 30 min to 2 hours at a time. Today she pooped on the bathmat (which she's never done) and then disappeared for the entire day to the point that I was scared and went out looking for her.

My old roommate has been talking about wanting a cat. There's a solid chance I'm going to be giving the fluffball away. I don't want to, because he's a little ball of love, but as much as I would love a cat that affectionate (until they become overly needy,) I also want my other cats to be happy, and I know there isn't enough of me to go around for all three.

Cats hate change but eventually get used to it sometimes. Your cats might, they might not, but it's kinda hard to evaluate after 1 day.

Kitten is still here. For now, at least.

Roommate likes kitten more than my other cats but doesn't want to go so far as to appreciate having the kitten in their life. Meanwhile, cat #2 is still absolutely at odds with kitten. Cat #1 doesn't care; he's mellow AF and has gotten over it. But cat #2 is extremely territorial and dominates the neighborhood strays. I have a hard time keeping her from antagonizing the kitten.

Which is a shame, because the kitten is the sweetest thing in the world. Knows no fear. Is perfectly approachable. Doesn't get himself into trouble by being overly curious. Doesn't have any medical or behavioral issues. Is adorable.

I still have an outlet if my old-old roommate wants him. She came over with her daughter to visit and fell in love. If I don't pass them the kitten, they'll be on the market for a cat next week after they return from a trip.

Did you check around your neighborhood? Like, is there any chance that the kitten got away from a nearby household or something? I mean, I guess nobody came around to ask but are you sure it's a stray?

He's remarkably well-socialized, so that possibility does occur to me, but the kitten isn't the type to bolt out the front door and get lost, so he had to be an outside cat of some kind. When I found him, his back end was coated in filth, so I think he'd been abandoned for about a day and was finally striking it out on his own.
