Apparently Miura was pretty averse to letting anyone take over significant parts of the work so he was doing as much of the art himself as he could. Makes me really worry for people like Takehiko Inoue (Vagabond) and Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter x Hunter) that have pretty famously taken extended breaks from their work.
