Poll of the Day > Just started Resident Evil 7 (spoilers?)

So the first hour, I was running around hiding from Daddy, and I was all "How the hell is this a Resident Evil game????" Then I fought him in the garage, and I found a statue of a bull, and I was all "okay goofy boss fights, check, puzzles, check. This is starting to look like Resident Evil." Then I entered the foyer, and holy fuck, this is straight up just Resident Evil 1 in the bayou. There's scorpions and snakes nailed to doors, so I know I need to find a scorpion key and a snake key. There's a statue holding a shotgun, and when I pick it up the door closes and locks me in, so I know I need to find a fake or broken shotgun somewhere. I need to find three dog heads to open a door, and like a piece of a painting with a hawk or something. This is actually pretty good so far! I'm excited to play more.

If I found the RE1 remake really frustrating and unpleasant to play do you think I'd like it? That was my only foray into resident evil like a decade ago but the newer entries have caught my attention

RE7 is a first person game, so it's definitely more modern. You should try the HD remaster of RE1, if you play with a controller, the stick controls like a video game, but the d-pad has tank controls, and it's actually useful to do a mixture of the two. Also it's important to remember that in REmake, killing zombies is a form of resource management. REmake is all about microchoices. If you kill a zombie, you have to make sure you're making the right choice, and also that you probably want to burn it. I'd say give it another good honest try. REmake is one of my favorite games of all time. And I recently played RE2make, and it's pretty damn good too! I'd recommend that one for a mix of modern and classic feeling RE. That one also has some of the microchoices game design that REmake has, but not nearly to the extreme that REmake has.

The puzzles are kind of like the older RE games, but the writing is way better, and doesn't come off as something that a brain damaged person came up with. That's because Capcom finally realized that they're really shitty at writing, and outsourced it.

Maybe it's just me but I found the chainsaw fight to be pretty difficult. Like I figured out the pattern pretty quick, but then surprise he just chops my head off. I got to the part where he knocks down the pillar like 5 or 6 times before I beat him. I think a lot of my problem was that running just doesn't feel fast. Running in this game feels like normal walking speed in any other game.

I'm on the ship, just played Mia's flashback. Yeah okay this totally has to be part of the original RE timeline. IDK if Mia is Umbrella or some other company, but she's definitely messing around with something she shouldn't be messing around with. I must be getting close to the end. The house was super well designed, you're constantly finding new routes through old locations, and every god damn time you have to go down to the basement it is creepy as FUCK. So far I'm loving it, I can't believe I waited this long to play it.

You're past the best part though. Once you get to the ship, the game just kind of goes downhill.(it's still solid, just not as good)

Chris works for Umbrella now??? I dont remember much of 5 and I never played 6. Is this like an established thing? Anyway yeah the house is the best part of the game. The ship and mines felt very out of place. Overall though, not a bad game at all!

Oh and Im a little confused about how the infection works. It seems to be different for everybody, and the timeline of infection is a little confusing. I understand Eveline vomits up the mold, it infects your cells, and it repairs your body, allowing detached limbs to reattach themselves or to have rapid healing and regrowth of damaged tissue. But then if youre infected long enough you become her psychic slave. But then why do some people turn into monsters and others just go crazy?

That's explained in RE8 via concept art. They turned people into the mold monsters by dunking them into bath tubs full or the mold.

Funny thing to remember - Resident Evil originally started as a horror version of the point-and-click adventure games from the mid-90s. So the puzzles basically ARE the core of the game. The fighting and zombies and shooting rocket launchers are just the added garnish.

It's a little more complicated than that.

Canonically the original Umbrella Corporation has collapsed and no longer exists (it's been gone for about 15 years at this point). But all of their secret labs and research projects are still out there, and a lot of different groups are trying to recover the data/samples/etc.

What was left of the original security division of Umbrella reorganized as a new group (with the same name) that exists solely to track and and clean up the old Umbrella-related messes and BOW things in general. It's part of why their new logo is blue instead of red - to differentiate from the original but indicate that they're fixing Umbrella's mistakes.

Chris isn't actually part of the new Umbrella, but he's worked with them because they have similar goals now. Assuming the new group can actually be trusted...

Didnt feel like doing the DLC of Chris in the mines lost my interest.

But yeah I think this RE blows RE2make out of the water. Every area brought something new to the game. Love the main house and the bayou/greenhouse but dat Saw style level? Wow never expected Capcom to pull something like that.

You've got it backwards. Chris is with a team with Umbrella in 8 as well, and you find out at the end that the BSAA is sending in BOWs.

Actually, Chris' Wolf Hound Squad was formed under BSAA, but went rogue and is operating under no one but Chris.

Funny that I see this topic right after beating it.

The ship was annoying, but then the mines and final boss were the easiest sections in the game imo.

Now I can finally get around to playing RE8.

Well unlike RE2make you can actually unload enough ammo onto them, and they will leave you alone for 10 minutes or so. They should lay down like theyre dead for a while.

I beat the game, I did not realize it was that short, I thought it was like ~twice as long. I expected to return to the estate and have to re explore it. Took like ten hours. But apparently this is standard RE length so that's on me

I cured Zoe which is apparently non canonical and boy does it fucking show. Please don't implement player choices like this.

Also somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but Eveline was designed in a lab under the Baker estate, then was put on a boat to be shipped somewhere else, then made the boat crash right back at the Baker Estate? What? Seems awful convenient.

But anyway it was really fun and I'll be playing the DLC next. Spawning enemies right behind you in the last area is bull shit tho
