the law is just you have to be 21, right? Like, the fact that the ID is expired should really be proof that youre over 21, because youve had it long enough to be expired!

My ID expired on the 21st of may and I had renewed it online in April but it never came in the mail. They said on the site it takes 2-4 weeks, but due to covid it might take longer, and they were extending all expired licenses till June or something.

then last week I was like nah this shits taking forever and went to the dmv and they were like oh yeah we fucked up and sent it to the wrong place, heres your temporary one.

so then Im at Safeway and buying alcohol and I show him my ID and hes like thats expired. First of all who the fuck looks at that. I am like I have the paper one in the car I didnt think Id need it, and he was like And I was like okay Ill brb

so unnecessary

Maybe there's something that needs to be scanned? Or it's to crack down on expired IDs in general? I don't carry expired IDs or buy alcohol, so I can't speak to it.

At any rate, maybe you can use this to kick the habit.

He did not scan it either way so it wasnt that, and many times at Safeway they just ask my date of birth?, and its to crack down on expired ids in general for whom? For the state? For Safeway?

But he wouldnt get in trouble. And he knows that.

many Safeway cashiers say date of birth? Many Safeway cashiers say, ID? Many Safeway cashiers, mostly younger ones, say, would you mind taking it out of your wallet, I have to scan it.

yes, Ive had all three. If the third one had happened to me, Id have explained the exact same shit, and when he said I cant do that Id be like aight fine gimme a sec Ill grab that shit.

this dude straight looked at the expiration date through my wallet. Didnt even make me take my ID out.

bro. Get over yourself. Im obviously over 21. My shit expired literally two weeks ago. Im super fucking obviously not under 21 years old. I tell you I have the thing in my car. The state of California has extended expired licenses. Im fucking CLEARLY not under 21.

The main idea is that, if a license is expired, the actual person may have gotten rid of it, and someone else may have taken it and used it to make a fake ID for themselves.

Being a current/valid ID makes it far more likely that it's actually your ID.

You can argue over whether or not that's a realistic concern (especially with more advanced forms of ID these days), but that was the original logic behind the law. It's not petty or random, or designed solely to annoy you.

You could write your birthday on an index card in crayon and tape your picture to it and that wouldn't magically make it a valid ID.

The entire point is that if it's a valid ID, the person checking it can be more sure that your information was actually checked and vindicated by a trustworthy agency to guarantee you aren't lying. And again, once it expires, it increases the odds that it's not a valid ID.

In the old days, people would literally take someone else's old, expired ID, slice it in a way that allows you to remove the original picture, insert a new one, and then relaminate it. So you could be 14 years old and still have an ID with your picture on it that says you're 27.

Again, you can argue that it isn't as necessary NOW because most government-issued IDs are more sophisticated today (specifically to prevent forgeries), but that's WHY the rules exist in the first place. The assumption is that someone isn't going to give away or sell their current, valid ID for someone else to use as a forgery, and if someone steals your current ID you're more likely to report it missing and get a new one (and the one they stole will only be useful for a short period of time before it expires).

MICHALECOLE posted...
But since the super random expiration dates (that are different per state), the cashier at safeway wants to grow some balls over nothing?

Considering the cashier has almost certainly been instructed that they MUST check IDs and decline expired ones, and can potentially lose their job, be fined, or even risk jail time if they violate the existing rules and get caught, they probably don't give a single solitary fuck over whether or not you feel buttchapped over being asked for a non-expired valid ID. They're not crusading white knights taking it upon themselves to insure that justice is done even if it inconveniences you, they're doing their fucking job.

You do realize that the government will literally send people in to places to attempt to buy alcohol and cigarettes from cashiers and either provide no ID or expired ID just to see if the cashier will sell to them? And if they do, the business can get in a lot of trouble? I actually know a couple business owners who had trouble with this because the bored cashier they hired didn't give a fuck and got caught.

You can complain about the way things are all you want, but it's not really the fault of the people carding you.

This. A non-expired ID has some record somewhere of it being valid. Once it expires, that's no longer the case, which dramatically increases the risk of it being fraudulent.

MICHALECOLE posted...
But he wouldnt get in trouble. And he knows that.

Not necessarily. If a store isn't doing their due diligence to check IDs, they can have their license to sell liquor revoked, especially if they've recently been caught slacking on that duty. To that end, it's in managers' best interests to make sure their employees are following the rules, up to and including firing them if there's a pattern of non-compliance. Stores stand to lose far more by being penalized for failing to check ID than they do by checking ID, especially where the vast majority of people shopping there are going to have a valid driver's license on them (since that's also a requirement for driving, plus most people keep their ID in the same place as their money).

Is it inconvenient? A little. But it's not like you didn't know there was a chance it'd be needed, and you failed to prepare for that possibility.

Bullshit. I worked at a Safeway liquor store for 3 years in university. We were visited by agents a few times and were given an evaluation report after they left, not knowing they were agents until after they left and we received the report.

They would try sneaky shit like giving us ID that doesn't legally count (like a college ID).

A coworker of mine was busted for not IDing someone and the store was fined several thousand dollars. In that case, they had a second agent in the store that asked the cashier after she sold the first agent alcohol without ID how old she thought they were. She said "like 22 or 23", which is what resulted in us getting fined since we had to ID under 25.

A liquor store in my town now IDs under 40 because they've apparently been busted a few times, as their employees haven't done a good job of determining if someone is under 25.

No. My point was that the rules are the rules, and that it's not worth the risk of getting into big shit just to break those rules.

Surely you have another kind of ID. A passport? If you don't, that's on you.

It requires a valid ID. An expired license does not count as 'valid'. By accepting an invalid ID to purchase alcohol he's committing a felony which can result in immediate dismissal, fines, and criminal prosecution. It's like if a place only accepts passports as valid if they're from one or two different countries and you come up with a passport from a third, completely different, country. Even if the cashier can see that you are old enough and have proof of it the story policy, and potentially law, says they can't accept said passport so selling it is grounds for dismissal. Sometimes a manager overrides and doesn't care. This is a bad behavior because it teaches the employee that there is no point in standing their ground when they see something shady going on (because the manager will just override it for a quick sale). But most employees will only sell to someone with an invalid ID if they are actively trying to get fired. Anyone with a degree of job loyalty will refuse the sale outright.

Just provide the temp ID. I don't get what the big deal there was and why you didn't present it in the first place.
