Maybe let you get them earlier with sidequests or something. Pokemon has been pretty good in more recent games in terms of putting cool pokemon earlier on. Idk

sidegrades tbh. think about it -- the higher up in level you go the less the damage numbers really mean, right? because of variance and how like 300 more HP of damage doesn't really matter if you're doing 4k per swing?

It would just be better if everything was upgradeable in small increments. Think like FFXIII Crystarium but for equipment.

In the end, "make it be dead" isn't a hell of a lot different from "make it be dead, with poison". All that matters is how quickly it gets dead.

status effects weren't really what i had in mind when i mentioned sidegrades -- so a little while ago i actually messed around with an ff6 editor and i decided to make all weapons have equal attack power but do different things. it gave me the ability to, for example, give cyan a sword that poisoned him and gave him the sap status, and also drained MP for crits. and a 2-hand sword (only) that ignored defense. and the tempest, but also another sword kinda like it that you could pair with it to do more magic damage. and i think i had a holy-elemental one that never missed.

stuff like that. stuff that you can build builds around. team fortress 2 was awesome at this.

That can be pretty tricky. At first I thought it was amazing that Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 let you grind the auction house for like 90% of the game's uber gear fairly early in the game, but I soon realized that the endgame experience had no value because I was already tired of said uber gear and had nothing to look forward to equipment-wise.

Star Ocean used to have a fantastic way of doing things like this. With blacksmithing and things like that. A random drop rate from opening something or creating something. If you wanted to take the time in SOtSS you could get the second most powerful weapon in the game like a few hours in.

But the process was long and very specific.

"Make it be dead, while making me not be dead" is a viable option. Mmmm.... hp-drain.

the ffta games had weird damage values if i'm remembering right. like it wasn't strictly vertical.

(i mean for the weapons, like i think late-game stuff didn't have this staggering advantage over middle stuff)

this is what "post game" content is usually for, like the FFX Arena or the DQ9 Grottos.

you know i was thinking 'more of the lategame equips' and not just like 'the ultimate weapon endgame equips.' like ffx should've had a wyrmhero mode.

Yeah, I love this method. Makes getting new equipment fun. My ideal RPG is half crafting sim with tons of gear mods like you have in mind.

Yeah, post games are so hit or miss though.

i tend to be leery of crafting systems because they so often devolve into basically just a different kind of currency system with more pain-in-the-ass tax, particularly in JRPGs. i didn't really mess around with it too much (lol melee only + fire axe) in fallout: new vegas but it seemed like the modding system there was nifty-like.

yeah, that.

That one component you need to craft that thing is a raredrop from that one boss you only get to fight once. Have fun!

Final fantasies like to do this:
-Get to final area
-Go beat super dungeon and the super boss at the end gives you a super move/spell/weapon

You have practically nothing to use it on and you already beat the superboss so you dont even need it.

Since I mostly play turn based rpgs, most if not all have an NG+ or postgame stuff. Hell lots of them have achievements that can only be gotten from a NG+.

Open world games that have you clearing everything should come with options to reset it all when youre fully upgraded. Why this isnt a thing especially in single player games is kinda baffling.

Barring the ones that already have it of course.

Final Fantasy X-2 did NG+ right: keep all your uber gear, but restart your characters at level 1, so you get to enjoy the goodies without completely losing that all-important sense of progression.
