No, but it's pretty close to neutral.

There are a lot of issues with episodes 8 and 9, though I don't really blame his character for my opinion of those films. He's just a bit too mopey and dull for me to say I like him. He's not bad or anything, and I do like Adam Driver a lot. Kylo Ren is just kind of whatever.

Yes, despite the "thrilling" conclusion of the trilogy he had a strong enough start and enough positive highlights that I still love the character. I like that he's not just a carbon copy of Vader, but man I don't like what he ultimately became.

I liked the Force Awakens, but not because of him. The other two movies sucked.
He was a shitty villain. I was never able to take him seriously or even understand why he was supposed to be such a big deal to begin with. He looked like a sore loser to me

Ehhh, yes?

He's easily the most interesting part of the sequel trilogy, but Rise of Skywalker really throws his entire character arc off balance. I'll still say yes, because he's at least interesting.

Yes

I was also conflicted about which way to vote for this character because of the final movie. Kylo is my favorite character from the new Star Wars movies and really the only one that I ever felt had the potential to be an interesting character, but unfortunately not much of that potential was ultimately actualized and the final movie went for the most boring and predictable possible approach for his arc. I think seeing a confused and dispassionate Kylo trying to lead the First Order against Rey for the last movie would've been a much more interesting general direction for that film to have gone.

Yes, but I haven't seen Episode IX for what that's worth.

Very different type of villain than the norm for operatic media, but honestly, more real? He's a petty, tamtrum-throwing loser who projects a veneer of macho confidence, but is still legitimately dangerous because of the power he holds. This is actually way closer to how villaous people behave in real life.

Yes

I enjoyed him a lot in TFA and TLJ, but eh was "eh" in RoS like... pretty much everything else in that one. He's a more complex villain than the one-dimensional Big Bad Emperor Sheev Palpatine.

Like most people I wish that RoS was better. Even J.J. Abrams has lamented how it turned out because Disney was rushing him.

Know what? I'm going to use this thread to rant. One thing I liked about Kylo Ren was specifically that he's learning as things go and especially in TLJ is trying to forge his own path - it gives him room for character development in a way Darth Vader didn't have in the original trilogy. Not saying that Kylo was a better villain than Vader though, more just that it was nice to see something different there. I honestly kind of hate it when people criticize Kylo for being a "wimp" of sorts when that's precisely the point of the character - first he's trying to live up to Vader and then he decides to forget it and just carve his own mark on the galaxy. Instead you have people like The Critical Drinker force identity politics into this and insist that Kylo is a sissy because Rey isn't allowed to lose. Wow, great logic.

On that note, while I was glad about TFA's "diverse" leading cast when the movie came out I otherwise never really gave a crap about that aspect of the sequel trilogy and I wonder if Rose and Holdo would be such infamous characters if they weren't played by a performer of Asian descent and had purple hair respectively. And I'm no fan of either character myself. I do think Disney shouldn't have made such a big deal about the diversity of the films' casts but it was at least understandable given before the franchise had gotten a bad rep among some for under-representing women and POC (which I don't really agree with, at least for the OT since those movies were, well, old).

I figured if this thread was already here might as well.

Part of the reason I bring this up is because some people think that Kylo Ren shouldn't have killed Lor San Tekka at the beginning of The Force Awakens before reading his mind, even though by that logic it was equally stupid of Hans Gruber to kill Joe Takagi at the beginning of Die Hard before he could force him to tell the code for the last vault lock.
