Ironically, if there's one thing I loved about 'The Stanley Parable', it's that ALL the achievements are like this. The game's narrator even mocks you for attempting them.
Made me think about deadpool shortly after beginning the game you get an achievement and he looks at the screen and says "ohhh...its gonna be one of those games"

Yeah thats what deadpool was making fun of. Game did have atleast of couple insanely hard trophies though. For me anyways. Shame that game came out before the movie. It was good but would have likely had a better budget if came after the movie. As it stands its a b grade hack in slash you'll only truly enjoy if you are a deadpool fan

Star Wars Battlefront 2015 has a few insanely hard ones, like win once in each game mode. Some are easy, but modes like Hero Hunt are hideous. Originally, whoever got the kill shot got to be the next Hero/Villain. Then it changed to random pick iirc, then to whoever inflicted most damage during the current Hero/Villain.
Walker Assault also had a difficult one, namely be the Speeder that kills an AT-AT. First you have to get the Speeder token (hopefully someone isnt camping the spawn point), plus the tokens only show during the third and final segment.

One that gets under my skin are "trophies" and "achievements" that are nothing but obvious filler meant to pad out the game.

Like "Press (A) 5 Million Times" or "Complete the Game While Crab-Walking" or some shit
How they decide what's bronze, silver or gold often have no rhyme or reason. Some of the hardest to obtain trophies only give a bronze trophy, while the easiest give a silver or gold trophy.

Clear chapter 3, silver trophy. Clear chapter 4, gold trophy. Beat the optional super boss with a stick wearing nothing but your pajamas, bronze trophy.

Level scaling. I hate it with a passion. It doesn't make the game harder, it just ruins the sense of progression. If I want to take my level 90 character back to the starting area and steamroll some level 2 rats, then let me do that.

This, massively. One of the most satisfying things is spending the time grinding to make yourself powerful so you can go back and steamroll shit.

Also, as mentioned "surprise mechanics". EA does it really bad in FIFA, even WoW has started fucking doing it (the two games I mainly play as an adult).

It's fucking annoying to have the "chance" of obtaining the best item on the first day of a release, or you may NEVER see it. That type of design is pure trash. Games should reward time, effort and grinding, not the person who gets lucky.

Don't get me wrong, luck obviously plays a part to it, but the way games are designed, you can play/open as many lootboxes as possible and never see the uber rare item you want. I feel like previous game design meant that you could grind towards something and KNOW that you will eventually get it.

Let me use WoW as an example, at the moment gear is mainly all RNG, you can get it on your first drop of a dungeon in the patch, or you may literally never see it. In TBC, the same thing, except you also earn "Badge of Justice", so after a set amount of grinding dungeons, you will have enough of the currency to purchase an item that may fill that slot, or another one. So if you grind for 30 hours, you KNOW at the end of the 30 hours, you might have your dropped item AND the Badges for another item.

Game design where you can grind for those 30 hours and potentially have nothing? Garbage. Or worse than nothing, something shit that pretends to be your steak knives prize.

level scaling complaints are weird to me
i literally can't imagine what's fun about fighting some piss-easy enemies that aren't worth my time, and games shouldn't be making me backtrack to those areas in the first place
unless the level scaling is straight-up just handled in a bad way, i don't see why people care

but on a similar note, tying damage and status effect infliction to level comparisons is pretty dumb

This mostly stems from developers not liking the trophy thing to begin with but being forced to do it to be allowed to put their game on the console, so they just fill out the list with random shit

Yeah I dont expect 100% cause people buy games then never play them. But anything less than 99% raises an eyebrow

I guess people even on consolea are bad about backlogs. I mean I am but I usually play the starting area of any game I purchase before backlogging it

Fuck multiplayer trophies/achievements. Sends my OCD through the roof when I see shit like "Reach #1 on the World rankings" or "Win 1,000 online matches" as I know I'll never have 100% on that game.

Currently just trading victories in Injustice with an online rando I met to clear the 100 online wins achievement. There's nothing about it that I actually find fun; I'm just stressing to get this done while there's still someone about playing and the servers are still (barely) functioning.

A form of copyright protection. Games back then came with such gimmicks to deter pirates. Games would have you refer to things like that, or the instruction manual and have you turn to a specific page and input a certain word in order to continue the game.

AFAIK this is because more in depth DRM simply wasnt possible or feasable at the time due to the lower teq

Ive never encountered these myself, but i have dealt with CD Keys.

...which where usually ridicolously easy to bypass, as any key was legit, though in some cases (Cough Warcraft 3 cough) the key was also used for online access so you couldnt be online at the same time as someone else using the same key.

You can also delete it, if you havent gotten any achievements yet... which could maybe explain the Press Start achievements?
