Remember that South Park episode about men leaving the toilet seat up, and how the men just told the women to close it if they didn't want to fall in, and then all the men and women in South Park went to court over it?

Well, turns out the reason given in the show isn't actually the reason women in the real world want the toilet seat to be closed. The real reason is because when you flush with the lid up, your toilet flings tiny little particles of piss and shit all over the bathroom, and the only way to prevent that is to close the lid first and then flush, which therefore makes closing the toilet seat the man's responsibility. Seriously, your wife isn't going to be with you every time you go to the bathroom, right?

I was with you up until this point. Why does the toilet flinging pee and poop around become the mans responsibility?

While true, the difference between opening and closing the lid is negligible

Newsflash: if you can smell shit, the air is already full of shit particles. Good luck keeping them away from your toothbrush.

The problem is the argument is never really over whether or not to leave the LID up. It's whether or not to leave the SEAT up. Or down.

It's why my answer to the gender-based argument has always been that no one should be fighting over it because both sides are wrong anyway, and the answer is you should be closing the lid (which puts the seat down by default).

Because preventing that means closing the lid prior to flushing, which means whoever's in the bathroom at the time must do it. It's less that it's the man's responsibility and more than it's everyone's responsibility, which just happens to include men.

Allow me to rephrase: closing the lid is the responsibility of whoever is using the toilet at the time, as only the current user is in a position to close the lid before flushing. The South Park episode missed this point by giving an incorrect reason as to why the lid should be closed (so women don't fall in, which is not a real concern).
