Im reposting this from the PC board, because it seems pretty slow over there today and I need a monitor pretty quickly.

So, apparently my twenty year old monitor died on Saturday and now I need a new one. As, I havent bought a computer monitor in ages, I have no idea whats out there or reliable companies to choose from. Seriously, my monitor that died is the old 15 square size (not widescreen). I do play a lot of games and have a gaming computer if that helps. Im also not sure of budget because I have zero clue whats out there or what to look for, but nothing ridiculously expensive, please. Thanks!

P.S. My graphics card is a GIGABYTE Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 ATX Video Card GV-RX580GAMING-8GD

monitors are pretty cheap these days honestly, just find one that's big enough for you (and has the resolution you want) and you're fine

How is this one?

In my opinion I would suggest at least 144Hz. I have been eyeing this LG monitor and kinda waiting for my current monitor to die to justify a new one.

That looks nice, but in the description it says there is a newer version available. Is it worth it to get the new version?

Thank you!

I think the newer version is a 165Hz version. I personally might consider paying the extra $50 since I tend to use the same monitor for years.

But my existing monitor of six years is still alive and my priority is getting either a RX 5000 or 6000 series GPU, hopefully by the end of this year for something closer to MSRP price. *crosses fingers*

Well, in case it was missed above because Im guilty of skimming over long posts myself, I can vouch for LG making quality monitors. My last monitor was an LG and it survived twenty years before it turned off and never came back on.

Just get a 55" LED 4k TV and run a HDMI cable to it.

You could probably get a decent monitor for cheap at the pawn shop, tbh.

LG has been my go-to since my first LED monitor some 15+ years ago. My current/second is a LG 27" monitor. https://tinyurl.com/t3wfp4br. Bought in 2015 and still trucking along.

What kind of stuff are you looking for? If you're just trying to tide yourself over I think your graphics card does 1080p moderate maybe 2k on low settings so you can get anything really in the $200 and below range which might even be overkill as it is.

1920x1080 is exactly half the vertical and horizontal resolution of 3840x2160 (also called 4K), but it's somehow not 2K. Facts don't matter anymore, apparently. Now you can make up your own alternative facts about everything. 720p is standard definition. Most films are shot at 30 frames per second. CDs are 48 kHz 24 bit PCM. DVD Video is 720p. LaserDiscs have digital video. Super Nintendo is 32 bit.

Typically I don't really give a shit about trolling, sometimes it's even fun to engage in, but these are terms which are used and understood throughout the industry to mean certain things. You may disagree with the nomenclature, maybe you even think it's fucking stupid, and on that point I might even be inclined to agree. However, what you're posting and the manner, and thread, in which it's posted carries with it the potential to have someone make a costly mistake. And that's bullshit.

Depends, I got a 55" RCA for under $300, because it is a Roku, so it's tracking everything I do on it. Of course that was fall of 2019 before the chip shortage...

It can get pretty complicated, but there are three basic panel types: TN, VN & IPS. TN are pretty fuzzy and kind of outdated now a days for anyone but the sweatiest of sweatiest gamers who value response time over all else; VN have the best blacks and are good all rounders ; and finally IPS give you good color saturation and accurate color reproduction at the cost of weak blacks and often backlight glow. So that is panel type.

Then you got refresh rate. In general, while your video card is pretty weak, you want a 144hz here. That way you will get the smoothest image provided you can get the FPS, although you will have a hard time get close to 144 FPS with anything but older games like CS GO and League with that graphics card. Still, pretty sweet when you can get the high FPS.

Then finally the size. In general, 24 inches is optimal for 1080p and 27 is optimal for 1440p. Since, your video card is a bit weak, you may want to consider a 1080p monitor, since you will get about 1/2 the fps at 1440p compared to 1080p and you generally don't want to be dipping bellow 60fps. Plus there are weird scaling issues with 1440p sometimes, since it is a weird stop gap resolution similar to 720p. But that extra screen real estate can be nice, so I can see why people like them

Thank you for the insight. I can understand how GPUs will be strained more at higher resolutions but can you please elaborate bout the scaling issue with 1440p and 720p? How noticeable is this?

On an unrelated note. My first monitor in the late 90s/early 2000s was either a 15" or 17" CRT. I cannot imagine using that nowadays. I played World of Warcraft yay back and with the amount of addons on my screen, I barely saw what is happening during a boss fight.

It's mostly an issue if you are using a 1080p resolution on a 1440p monitor, since they are not even multiples with one another, you will have a stretched blurry image. You can set the monitor to 1080p mode to compensate, but you will have black bars. Just a minor annoyance.

I guess also if there is a 2d game built around 1080p there can be scaling issues, since there usually is a fixed pixel array with them, but there shouldn't be any issues with a 3d game due to the way they handle textures. Not a huge deal overall, but just something to pay attention to

Between cryptomining, chip shortages, scalpers, and possibly new PC builders from people staying home cause of COVID, the top end GPUs (i.e. GTX 3090 / RX 6900 XT) could be in the $2k-3k range.

Even the previous generations of GPUs (i.e. GTX 1000 / 2000 series, RX 500 / 5000 series) are going for 2-3x their normal cost, whether new or used.

After briefly researching this a bit further, now I am concern bout wanting to upgrade to a 32" 1440p monitor with a R9 380 GPU. What is your opinion regarding 32" 1080p monitors? My current monitor is a 27" 1080p if that matters.

I don't know. I have only used a 24 inch 1080p monitors. I would imagine 32 inches at that resolution would have too low of pixel density. I would definitely go for a 1440p monitor if I were going that big
