Topic.

Writers.. Not some random AF nobody. Talking about people like George RR Martin or Robert Jordan. You will have all their English,Language skills as well as their imagination for whatever field they write in.

I'd take the ability. I always wanted to be a writer.

The odds of me putting story together that gets any sort of traction that puts me on their level, even if I have their talent, is so slim, I'll take the guarantee.

This. Ability alone doesn't get you there. You can be the best writer in the world and be broke because you never got the opportunity.

But it's not anywhere close to guaranteed. $5 million with no strings attached is way better. I bet you there are tons of writers that are better than GRMM, but just never got the chance.

think we gotta go with the money, however interesting it'd be to have this ability and possibly monetize it, 5 millions opens up way too many opportunities, much easier to make money with money in the end and especially opens up your schedule to pursue whatever it is you want to pursue without worrying about food and shelter

This.

Getting your first book published is like a lottery and I say that as somebody who has been lucky enough to win it. I know writers who are much better than me who are either unpublished or who took considerably longer than I did to get their first book out there.

Then once you are published, success beyond that is also a lottery.

Being a successful writer is probably about 95% luck and about 5% skill.

I have my doubts about it being entirely a lottery

A writers circle I follow all went through the same academic programs for the most part and I think all or almost all of them have published one or more books

yeah 95% luck seems a little over the top, you might need a different skillset that you work on so that you can network properly, work on you people's skills or something, that would improve massively the odds of a publisher reading your work, and if your work is good and they think it'll sell then there's no reason you wouldn't get published

If you get really lucky with synergistic writers, you could probably make bank pretty easily because the combined talents would help cover normal issues in the writing process. If you get unlucky and get writers in vastly different fields, might be hard to really mesh that into something worthwhile. Money is probably better unless you want to be a writer.

Still making it seem like it's an impossible task. Anything is possible especially if you already have the skill to do the task.

Just like fixing an old car and making it run again. Seems impossible at first. But if you know your cars and put an honest effort in restoring it. Then it wouldn't be that impossible. I always wanted to learn to write. And i think i could make enough money to be happy with my skills.

I'm not going to reveal publishing houses.

The first book I had published took about 4 months to get my first draft ready to send out (consider that it's a children's book if that seems fast). From there it took about 6 months of sending it out to literary agents before one agreed to take me on and about another year before it was published. I got knocked back by about 40 agents. Some just didn't reply. Others gave useful feedback.

No, it's possible. I feel like you aren't actually reading what I'm writing if you claim that.

My point is that even if you are very, very good, success is a long way from guaranteed.

I do still write books and it supplements my income somewhat but I'm not expecting to ever get rich from it. I do it because I enjoy it.

On a really good launch (for me) of a new book I'll make maybe 2/5s of my income from my main job back that year. Obviously by writing more books the longtime payments are increasing, but they're still very small after the initial bump.

Secondly, calling people lazy is hypocritical when it's actually you that wants to take the shortcut with something you enjoy lol. Thirdly, not everyone gives a shit about writing in general.

It's stayed pretty consistent. My sales aren't really good enough to give me any great leverage.

The marketing strategy is generally agreed by the agent and the publishers. However, there's a brief window of a month or two after a new book where I visit schools and bookshops (not full time) to promote it. My employer tends to give me the time off to do it because the publisher chucks a load of books for the school library at them.
