Which console has the best JRPG library?

I think it's probably between the PS1, PS2 and DS right?

PS1 or PS2 to be honest. The PS2 only eeks out the PS1 because the PS2 had a longer run and was able to amass a larger catalog before games stopped being made for it which IMO, just barely managed to surpass the number of quality titles. But PS1 definitely had the legends that built a serious foundation.

The PS1 probably had more good RPGs, but the PS2 could play PS1 games, so I sort of always viewed them as the same system.

100% the PS1.

Wild Arms 1 and 2
Breath of Fire III and IV
Final Fantasy VII-IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Xenogears
Legend of Mana
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon
Parasite Eve 1 and 2
Suikoden I and II
Grandia
Vandal Hearts
Vagrant Stories
Chrono Cross
Lunar 1 and 2
Valkyrie Profile
Dragon Warrior VII
Tactics Ogre
Arc the Lad
Brave Fencer Musashi
Alundra
SaGa Frontier
Granstream Saga
Jade Cocoon
Threads of Fate

The PS2 had a few gems, but was a downgrade from the PS1's library. Don't even get me started on how slim the PS3's jrpg library was.

Probably between the 3DS, the Switch and the PC oddly enough. Not counting emulated games, but games available digitally and enhanced ports.

SNES easily. This shouldn't even be a debate, the debate should be whether the PS1 or PS2 get the RPG silver medal.

I haven't played anywhere near enough JRPG's to be an expert on this. But from my limited expertise PS1 does seem like it has the most I want to play.

PS1 has the top classics, but PS2 has had some of the best iterations, and a lot of them.

I'd say they're about equal.

If we are talking just western releases, ps1 had more and better rpgs than snes did. On the super Famicom? Maybe it could challenge ps1. But I'm mostly just thinking of what America got

We missed alot of super famicom rpgs that never left japan

If you're just going by western releases I still think the SNES beats out the PS1. A lot of PS1 RPG's have aged like trash in the sun, while the SNES big boys really haven't. Something to be said for 16 bit graphics over 64. I'd much rather play FF V and VI then I would VII these days.

If you add in the SF exclusives (Which are ridiculously easy to play now because of fan translations, repros etc.) it isn't even a contest. Some of the SF exclusives make FF VI and Chrono Trigger look like small fries in comparison. Far East of Eden Zero for example.

I guess the reason I choose the PS2 over the PS1 is because of backwards capability so I include the PS1 library in addition to the PS2 one.

Also do the PS1 remakes count? Stuff like Chrono trigger where they add cutscenes?

Okay so my opinion not counting Backeards capability.

PS1 faves;
Grandia
Suikoden 2
Final Fantasy VII
final Fantasy iX
Final Fantasy Tactics
Valkyrie Profile
Star Ocean 2
Lunar Silver Star
Lunar Eternal Blue
Breath of Fire 3
Breath if Fire 4

PS2 faves:
Final fantasy X
Suikoden 3
Suikoden 5
Breath of Fire V
Disgaea
Persona 3
Persona 4
SMT 3
Kingdom Hearts
Valkyrie profile 2
Dark Cloud 2

So hard to choose. I tried to avoid remakes with the exception of Lunar as I never played the Sega CD versions.

Without backwards compatibility (since then it just goes by whatever has the best BC), I'd go with the PS1, especially if you include ports/remakes, with the SNES, PS2, DS, 3DS and possibly the GBA and PSP bringing up the rear.

I just personally find PS1 JRPGs to hit the sweet spot between old school and modern. They have some of the mod cons that make playing them more enjoyable, but still haven't fully taken on the recent trends I don't care for, that ramped up in the PS2 era and beyond.

I'd count any physical game actually for the system, although that would boost the gen 7/8/9 Sony and MS systems, when remasters/compilations really took off.

That's why we need rules for these topics, so we're comparing like with like.
