She had been gradually losing weight over the course of this year, but after a few visits to the vet it now turns out 70% of her kidneys are no longer functional. The vet prescribed medicine and kidney diet to make the situation more manageable, which it was at first.

But this week she's been getting gradually weaker every day, and today she's barely eating, if at all. She looks very thin, is listless, has trouble keeping balance and it takes a lot of effort for her to get anywhere. I've been hoping that she eats something, but she hasn't. It hurts to admit it, but I've come to face that she will be dead soon.

Tomorrow a good friend who used to be my cat's human before me is coming to visit, and I've kept her up to date on the situation. I hope my cat survives at least until then, so that they can have their goodbye.
If my cat survives the weekend, I think it will be for the best to have her put to sleep. She is suffering and it's only getting worse.

I just needed to get that off my chest. Still feel like shit, and I probably will for a while.

sorry, yea that really sucks.

when my cat was about 19, she started having issues with her kidneys, and I guess that's just something a lot of older cats experience.

Yeah, from what I've heard, it happens to one on three cats. I try to stick to high quality cat food, but there's just so much salt and and phosphorus in most ones, it's ridiculous.

Sounds like you've had quite a lot. Did you wait long in between before being ready for a new pet?

Sort of. My current cat is my first pet after moving out. Growing up though we always had at least 1 pet at any given time. Even when 1 died, there were others that we had. So I don't know what it is like to go from having a pet to not.

But I have lost 5 dogs, and 4 cats in my life

My cat kinda went through something similar. Her pancreas failed and she went from 11lbs to 6lbs and was skin and bones. She refused to eat for months and even when I put food in front of her eith enzymes for digestion, she wouldn't eat it. It got to the point where I literally shoved bits of food in her mouth with the enzymes every hour to get *something* in her, but she would just throw some of it up later.

Eventually I had to put her down. She wasn't immobilized and intensely suffering yet, but I know it was only a matter of time and I didn't want her to get to that point where she would be in a lot of pain >_> It was really hard but I knew it was the right thing to do and the best for her.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat, but if there is really no hope that they'll turn around, it might be better to put them down before they really start to suffer.

I've been there and experienced this. I am glad you are able to recognize that they are struggling and taking everg measure to monitor them. Cats are very prideful creatures and will try to hide any weakness so it is really up to us to make sure they are okay. My advice is to simply spend time with them, give them their favorites and make it as easy on them as possible. People for some reason think animals are stupid but they are very good at knowing when it's the end times for them. Comfort them in the best way that you can and go out of your way to make them as happy and relaxed as possible. I know it's heart breaking but it is one of the most important duties as an owner to make it as peaceful as possible, I just wish their life expectancy was as long as ours.

That is a lot. I can imagine it's a painful experience every time.
I guess technically this my second time. As a kid we had a cat, but at an older age one of her hind legs became too weak to function, and my father had her put to sleep, without explaining to me what had happened or how or why. I was angry at him for a long time after that.

Nah, that's just a pic I found somewhere that I found amusing.
This is her:

She's always been smaller than average. Very soft and cuddly too. At least, she used to be.

I tried to handfeed her which worked at first, but not anymore. She just moves away. It's just heartbreaking to see her move so weakly. It suddenly feels like Monday is ages away, because I now feel it would probably be better to put her to sleep sooner rather than later.

Yeah, same here. I get along with the average cat better than with the average human.
She's not eating at all right now, doesn't purr when I pet her and it feels like she's just given up.

Going through the same thing right now... I had to take my cat in to the vet over the weekend because she kept acting thirsty but wouldn't drink her water, and I found out she's in the early stages of kidney failure. They gave her a fluid injection and gave me an appetite stimulant for her, so she has been eating and drinking again this week, but she has definitely lost some energy and has been having trouble keeping her balance.

She's 18 and has been with me since shortly after she was born, and I don't really know how I'm going to cope with losing her. At least she's feeling well enough right now that we can still spend some time together the same as we always have, but it has been pretty devastating.

a long life. i was unfortunate enough to not have a cat live beyond 10 due to cancer.
i had my cat since she was 1 year old. early on she liked me. despite being an outdoor cat.

will someday face the issue with my dog she's 10 and still healthy despite the arthiritis and allergy's.

I'm sorry to hear about that. My cat that died of pancreas failure lived to 8. I was pretty heart broken over it. It's way too young for a cat to die.

Wish I knew earlier that appetite stimulants exist. Could've used one of those right now. No point i second-guessing myself in what I should've done, I guess.

Sorry to hear that. It must feel very unfair when it happens prematurely like that. I guess I should be grateful that my cat lived a full and happy life and was loved.

Gonna try to get some sleep now. I kissed my cat goodnight and hope she's still with me in the morning. She was just lying down in the corridor, resting. Guess she barely has energy to get anywhere now that she's not eating.

It really really sucks. Especially when you end up being the pet's special favorite that they always gravitate towards. I grew up, while not exactly poor, but certainly not well off enough to spend money on pet operations or regular medication, so any time a family pet got seriously sick my parents would put it to sleep.

Had like 6 cats growing up, and it never gets easier. Really sorry. The only thing that ever helps is getting a new pet, the younger the better so they can bond with you. I know you probably feel like you never want to get another pet again at this point, but do it. It'll be good for ya.

Well, my friend just left (the one who was my cat's human before me). Understandably it was heart-wrecking, but it was nice reminiscing on our memories of our kitty.

As for my cat, nothing much has changed. She just lays there, refusing any food, water or treats. All she does is crawl somewhere else every now and then, while I support her. I cleaned her with a towel and warm water as well, as she can't do that herself anymore.
I really wish I could just put her out of her misery by having her put to sleep, but as far as I can find, there's no vet in the vicinity that's open in the weekend.

Somehow I hope she passes on soon, so she won't suffer anymore. I don't have a backyard where I could bury her, so that leaves handing her body over to the vet. And even though it's a morbid thought, I can't help but think that if she were to die tonight, would there be noticeable decomposition before I can bring her to the vet on Monday? Is there anything I could do to slow that down?
I hope I'm just overthinking things here, that my mind is just trying to cope by focusing on practical matters.

She passed away last night. In the morning I found her in her cushion nest, cold and stiff. As I realized she was gone, I pet her for a while and cried.

I just brought her body to a veterinary that was open on Sunday. I just feel empty right now. At least I got to say goodbye, as well as my friend who visited yesterday, who was my cat's human before me.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. She was the sweetest, softest, cuddliest cat I've ever known. I will miss her so much.

Yeah, I keep telling myself that as well, as there have been several coulda-shoulda-woulda moments these last few days, but I think it's safe to say I've done all I could for her to the best of my ability and knowledge.

I had to put my cat down back in November. His arthritis in his legs was getting worse and I could tell he wasnt comfortable.

Took him to the vet for a teeth cleaning and there was something in his bloodwork that worried them ( but they didnt tell me what)When I got him home his back legs were barely working (but he was still eating) However the next morning he was crying because he could barely move so I took him in and said goodbye.

That's sounds like it must've been difficult. Not just because he died, but to make that decision, especially since it was such a specific part that was weighing him down. In the end it must have been for the best, since he was suffering and there was nothing else to be done about it.

Weird how little things like that can be indicators of little problems, but good to know.
I'm trying to learn these kind of things so that I can perhaps learn to take better care of any future cats I might adopt.
