Do people play these for the Monster training aspect, or do people actually like the battling?

I had PS1 and a GBA versions of these games, and I remember the battling being really bad. You just press left or right and monsters would have different attacks depending on how far or close they were. Did I give up on them too quickly as a kid? Does the battling get better as you get further into the game?

I think Battling was pretty simple. Though, it could get harder if you didnt train enough. It was just kind of addicting. That was 2. It was fun to try to get different monsters by using other CDs for games and music.

4 was a little different, though. While it was still fun using CDs (more because there were more types now), it also have an adventure section. You would explore caverns and stuff. And could ride the monsters, as well

I always let the monsters battle automatically. Makes it much more interesting.

I'm excited since I'm sick of needing to bust out a ps1/2 (although maybe ps3 can run it?) whenever I want to play it. Plus I imagine the loadtimes will be better on the pc or Switch.

The system is actually great once you understand it. It's an incredibly awesome system.

Granted, your monster also has fewer attacks at the start of the game so it feels limited.
