Have you?

They still have them in the UK and catches me off guard. They even wake up sleeping travelers to punch their ticket.

Seems like the guys who pump gas for you. Job seems superfluous in this day and age.

I wonder how many people if any they catch sneaking on without tickets. And what do they even do if the dude doesn't pay?

Call the cops at the next station to arrest him?

When dont they? At least the trains by me always check, maybe not every stop, but they will eventually check. There is a slot infront of your seat to put your ticket to have it punched, so you can sleep without getting disturbed.

It happens here in Canada on commuter trains. They go on the honour system but they have people checking regularly. Fine's are pretty hefty if you didn't pay your fare.

You think they are bad, try GWR

I've been stuck on or waiting for Penzance/Paddington trains for hours.

Once for 3.5+ hours. Pulled into Paddington at past 2AM. Literally everyone on board (who wasn't just going to London which I'd like 95% of the train) missed our connections and where left stranded.

Had to get an uber to Drive me from Central London to halfway up the country in middle of the night.

Yes.

I have also had the moment where I show up on the platform just as the train starts to leave.
Luckily I was still able to get a bus and make my way down into The City before my friend got there anyway.

In fact, I remember CEman helping me with directions.
Even telling me to look for an Easter Egg in one of the NYC tunnels.

I haven't really been on a train in 20+ years, but was checked fairly often when I did. Even got grumbled at for something--I think it was a pass for what was supposed to be one round-trip ticket that we got off on the return trip and reboarded the next train in.

Really? I take the GO at most twice a month and I've been checked probably three or four times in a year.

Edit: granted, a lot of the time it's on the weekend so maybe it's easier for them to check then.

Havent been in a while but Metro North to/from NYC checks.

I did see a guy that snuck on without a ticket. Its easy because they dont have a turnstile or anything before you get on the train. Dude tried moving the first time the conductor came through. Second time he got caught & had to pay in train price for the longest distance ticket (so New Haven to Grand Central).

y'all should take a train somewhere!

at least the suburbanites - it's a nice way to get into a city without having to worry about traffic or parking. :D take commuter train downtown, take innercity transit around
I've wanted to try it, especially since it would probably be less stressful to carry cats on there but it's like just easier to drive :/ used to take the Metro in to DC but now I know the parking game and it doesn't make sense to drive 40 minutes to a station to save ten minutes getting to the city

I don't remember if this is still the case, but a few years ago the most punctual train operator in the UK was the one owned by Deutsche Bahn

I don't remember the name of the operator, but they ran the trains out of Marylebone into the Cotswolds

Yes, but I know how to cheat the system a bit.

In the city, we have a Red Line subway system. The red line runs adjacent to a commuter rail and hits a few similar stops. My stop is beyond the red line though, so I need the commuter rail.

I notice that if I get on at the big station the commuter rail starts, I have to pay about 9 dollars one-way. If I ride the red line (2.50 ticket) to the end of that line and get on the commuter rail, the commuter rail ticket would be 3.50 to my stop.

The thing is, conductors seldomly check tickets beyond the initial starting station, and 95% of the time, I never get checked and can save that ticket for another trip into the city.

They always check going into the city though, but I spend the 3.50 to get off at the start of the red line.

For the longest time I confused the Greenline with the Redline, and I think it was because the Greenline went past Fenway, and everyone was wearing Red.

There are still stations here in the U.K. that have no barrier to entry, so you can get in the train for free. Theoretically, if there is no ticket checker you can get free rides if you know there is no barrier on the other side.

Apps like Trainline make this so much easier to do since you can buy a ticket in seconds in case you see a checker on a platform or coming down the aisle. So it never makes sense to pay the full fare if you know the layout of both stations as long as you have a good mobile signal.
